How to ship heavy tools
Hello Archivers, I'll be selling off my shop in the next few months. I have stakes, stands, anvils, shears and so forth. They don't fit in a flat-rate USPS box! :D I have no idea how to go about shipping such items if someone buys one. Any advice or bird-dogging would be greatly appreciated. Thanx.....

My definition of calling "dibs" on something for sale is when money changes hands. The real estate industry has solved the abandoning-a-dibs-conumdrum: earnest money. Just saying...

Re: Step-strike or strike-step?
The mind can learn many ways, the body learns best by doing. Here's a drill we did at Schola Saint George for learning to strike with weight transfer: !. Have your partner hold a rattan stick, one hand at each end, oriented such that if you strike the stick, you won't strike your partner. 2. From st...

My experience with pole weapons is that skinning the haft doesn't appreciably affect its longevity. A pole weapon usually just doesn't get the same abuse on the haft as a sword does on its blade. I have a halberd with a haft skinned and stained with a wood stain. It looks great and the haft is still...

A standard hacksaw and good from would probibly be better suited for something that thick. After thinking about that, I agree. Jeweler's saws work much better in my head than they do in real life :D And I sympathize with you Glaukos. I am reminded of when I was an untalented musician and other band...

Re: Does Anyone machine Aluminum?
If you have the time and the inclination and only want a one-off, you could always cut it yourself from an al billet. I've been thinking of doing that myself. A jeweler's saw, a belt grinder, and some files should be all that you need for the profile. For the center hole, you could buy a big-a** dri...

Re: Is there a gas saver for propane forge?
Thanks all! The AA hive mind is amazing. The idler valve at Diamond Back looks good. I'll have one free hand so it won't be that much of a hassle. I'll just mount it on the metal cart holding the forge and put the striker right next to it. Should be about as good as it'll get unless someone knows of...

Is there a gas saver for propane forge?
I am looking at an atmospheric propane forge setup for doing hot work. Is there any kind of gas saver device so that I don't have to work the LP cylinder valve open-and-close each time I do a heat? I think a foot operated switch would work great, but I don't know if there is such a product available...

Is my Beverly B2 setup wrong?
I bought a used Beverly B2. The blades look okay, no chips, etc. I can't find any manual on the net for how to adjust the blades. I think the B2 may be setup wrong. The top blade is right up against the bottom blade and the lever action is very stiff. It takes significant force to operate the shear....

hivemind, Here's my experience with wax-hardened gauntlets: They soften up when it gets hot, like when you're in the sun for a while. knotwolf, +1 on a non-refundable hefty down on custom work. With your rep serious buyers won't be deterred, and with something on the line, they're not as quick to walk away when the work's done. Some say "Follow the blade in." Tossing something at the eyes often works out well. I've been told it's wise to throw a shot that will land if not blocked. Thowing at the shield will be easily recognized and ignored by an experienced opponent in effect giving them free rein to do as they wish. For R...

twoswords, I agree with Konstantin. If you have a bit of space available, it's not that hard to make a shield press. You can make one with a minium of tools: a sabre saw, a drill and some screws and clamps. The advantages of having a shield press is that you can make a shield whenever you want. You ...

The last time I saw a copy available, it was offered on the German eBay (circa 2007) and sold for 900 USD. I may be mistaken, but I believe there were only 2000 copies printed. It has been called by some the "bible" for 15c milanese armours. This is a hard-to-come-by book and is usually only availab...

Re: Question about Aventails
Keeps swords from ever getting in between my helm and my gorget. I am of the opinion that the phrase "too much protection for my neck/throat" is crazy talk. A certain amount of mass in a helm is good thing for absorbing blunt force because it provides inertia. When attached to a helm, the aventail a...

+1 on what Broadway said. I am far from being the pope of SCA combat, but I would just offer this out for whatever it may be worth: I have heard it said that to master any skill takes 10,000 repetitions. I don't know if that's true, but for SCA combat it seems to me that the sweet spot for prowess s...

Hi Ali, This is what works for me for a large heater used for a static shield defense style, it probably would work for a kite too.
