Trying the link again: https://www.vikingeskibsmuseet.dk/en/pr ... -equipment

Yes, it would be useful to have a good date (or dates) on her source material; the next step.

Viking Arms and Armor, Again

Don Stallone, one of our very-long-time Longship Company and Markland members, forwarded the following link on what arms and armor were required on Viking Age levy ships: https://www.vikingeskibsmuseet.dk/.../weapons-and-equipment This is from the Viking Ship Museum at Roskilde in Denmark. Seems tha...

Re: English "Hangers" Around 1580-1615?

Swords & Blades of the American Revolution, by George C. Neumann has a number of pictures of English hangers that we used to liberate ourselves from said mother country. Also, of note, there is some confusion with the terms "cutlass" and "hanger" being used interchangeably during the same period. "N...

Clean, dry sawdust has been recommended. Some woods may be better than others- hardwood vs. pine? (Pine sap on your mail-sticky!) Avoid anything acidic, like black locust.

Re: If you were building a castle!

BarnHingesSingle_09142020 (2)_sm.jpg I haven't seen it carried to any logical conclusion, but if it had sufficient land and facilities a halfway decent castle would make an ideal anchor for a continuous Medieval/Renaissance fair. Every weekend (or one weekend a month, or variations around holidays)...

Re: If you were building a castle!

For an historic continuation of the "Z" plan, see Bents' Old Fort National Historic Site in Colorado. Stone- It's nice if the site can be quarried, or quarries are nearby. That's one of the reasons I advocated timber castles in my first post on this thread. Also, there seem to be a hack of a lot mor...

Re: At the Met: Last Knight:Art, Armor,&Ambition of Maximili

Still waiting for my friends to download their pictures, BUT... One of the questions that came up among us was: "How do they keep the armor so d@mned shiny?" When I was working on museum storage facilities in the NPS we were pretty exacting about balancing humidity for various classifications of art...

Okay; plese remember that these are specialized "snapshots" and in low light without a flash. My friends got some nice shots of the armors, but I figure I can't beat the catalogs, so I concentrated on a few tools and other items of interest. If you p.m. me, I can send the full-size (but still blurry...

Re: At the Met: Last Knight:Art, Armor,&Ambition of Maximili

I made it! There was a "Christmas Season" bus trip run by our local (60 miles south of DC) Parks and Recreation group, and I and four friends took it at $90 each. Instead of Christmas shopping and gawking at tall buildings, we hied off to the Met and spent about four of our seven hours time-on-targe...

Re: If you were building a castle!

Marshal: Ringwork, longhall, done! Many castles were fortified private residences, so they served double duty. Castellated mansions were mansions with some castle dress-up; but a livable castle was a defensive position with accommodations. Dig out some decent books on both via the Inter-Libra...

We have a small ship and a ship's boat; that keeps us busy enough. If my neighbor stopped renting my fields for crops, I might contemplate a small timber castle.

Re: If you were building a castle!

I would consult "Timber Castles" by Robert Higham and Phillip Barker, and build the smallest example I could find reasonable historic data on. Maybe something from the early Norman period, or a tower house in a ringwork, or equivalent.

"4) Spangen helm of any type. (4 fat triangles and 3 strips dished)" - Sean Powell

Also, make a preliminary model or two out of "shirt cardboard" to see how it all goes together; and then you can disassemble for a pattern. A good "band helm" is an excellent start for any early medieval kit.
