Re: ID this maybe-Del Tin sword?

Back In the Day (TM) Museum Replicas would, in addition to selling entire Del Tin swords, get Del Tin blades (not marked "DEL TIN" since the entire sword wasn't their product) and finished them with their own grips and furniture. I would bet that this is one of those critters. If you want I can dig ...

Re: Opinions: Morgan Library MS M.763 fol. 136r

I like how the mail shirt has the classic "gut" overlap that is necessary when you wear a belt over it. Also, his weapon kind alooks like one of the Maciejowski "choppers". Do you think they're actually trying to illustrate that his helmet has slid over his eyes, or is it just pulled low?

Re: Authentic misunderstanding

The crux of it comes down to "what are you trying to accomplish"? The level and type of your equipment and knowledge should match the purpose/goal. If it doesn't, then you shouldn't be doing it.

Re: Hand stitching canvas tents?

Different period, but the 7th US Infantry has all hand-stitched tents for its group. Granted, they have the advantage of cotton as a historically-correct material... but they look fantastic and work perfectly. If we're talking authenticity, I'd also recommend against getting material that is too hea...

Re: PSA: Do you have your arming carpet?

I believe the Templar rule also mentions a carpet as part of the equipment of a knight, but I think it is intended for sleeping on rather than arming on. Not sure why it wouldn't/couldn't be used for both... my copy is at home and I'm here stuck at work, but if someone else gets to it first they sho...

Rather than a just a quasi-perverted response to Matt, let me add and interject why I agree with him so strongly: The more research I do (and granted a lot of it is just looking at pictures) and the more I experiment with reproduction items, the closer I come to the conclusion (at this point persona...

Re: Gambeson in the viking age

So, how is a nearly impenetrable metal skin that can be put on in seconds some kind of DISadvantage compared to a wool shirt? Since bladed weapons are known to be a lot smaller and lighter than the movies would have us believe, and can sail through unprotected flesh with very little force behind th...

Bran also contains a high amount of oil, so it may also be useful as a preservative as well as a mild abrasive.
I think Tom Biliter uses walnut hulls, to good effect.

No doubt. But in his defense, you know that, and I know that, but as I'm sure you are painfully aware many (most?) lay people refer to the entire medieval period as the "dark ages."

Besides that, I think the video makes a good point fantastically.

Re: Questions about Gambesons, Circa 1200

It seems to me that arming clothes always follow the style of the time in which they were made. Would our Verona font not suggest otherwise, at least to a certain extent? One of the things that I found most surprising and intriguing was the form-fitted-ness; the fuller shirts/tunics of the period a...
