Re: Best books for design and construction of medieval European armour

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that TOMAR is not a good resource for beginners. It's not even a good resource. I got it early in my armour making journey, and after a while, when the irrational exuberance wore off, I realised it was pretty unhelpful. The armour examples are not especiall...

Re: Can anyone help me find this manuscript?

Those are both handsome books, but not the ones I'm thinking of. The one I can remember is a bit older than both of those in style. Maybe 1475 or so.

Lost to the deepest recessesof my memory!

Can anyone help me find this manuscript?

Hi folks, I was trying to desceribe a manuscript to someone today, but for the life of me I can't remember its name. To the best of my memory, it had these features: - late 15th to maybe early 16th C origin; - from what is now either Germany, Austria or Switzerland; - is illustrated; - commonly depi...

Re: spring loaded pin help needed

Mac: Unfortunately, it just doesn't work that way. A spring is a "beam in bending" and as such, it's strength is based entirely on its physical dimensions and the modulus of elasticity for the material. Crazy as it seems, three identical bars (one of mild steel, one of annealed 1050 steel, and the ...

Looking tantalising Mac. Will the whole project be in this thread or will it get one of its own? What are your thoughts on the reason for segmented breastplates? Could it be a function of the availability of suitable quality steel? For the time and place we see them, I'm not sure this is a convincin...

It would have to be a kastenbrust. - They're far too underrepresented on the various fields these days; - I think they're poorly understood; - The art at the time does not do it justice, so people don't have a good idea how cool it can be; and, - Dare to be different. The pedestal stand makes it appear far grander. Definitely pedestal stand.

On a bench, a small pedestal stand would look better than the wooden thing.

I might be seeing things, but if I don't say it... In the red highlight, is the face opening of yours not a bit rounder than the PDB? In the blue highlight, is the peak on the PDB less pronounced than on yours? I feel bad nitpicking, especially on something that's already received so much work, from...

Re: The Palazzo Ducale bascinet.

What setup do you have for your photographic backdrop? Are you manually hanging a sheet every time? If so, would it not be more convenient to install a roller blind on the ceiling? A second hand one could be had at low expense, and the time saving would mean it'd 'pay' for itself pretty quickly. Jus...

Re: The Palazzo Ducale bascinet.

Bravo!

I don't know why particularly, but I had assumed the cone for the visor would be pushed in to leave the occular/mouth proud, rather than pushing those bits out. It requires far less material to be moved this way, of course.

I don't remember seeing a pantograph with a 1:1 setting, though that could be because i didn't look for it.

I look forward to seeing what you do with it!

Are you just using an O/A torch with a cutting tip or do you have an Eric Thing forge?

Also, do you have a series of ball stakes of increasing diameter, or do you do it over air?

Brain's trust advice: pressing shield bosses

Hi all, I need a bit of advice, but I'm at least 50% sure of the answer. I have a need to press shield bosses. I've got access to a CNC lathe to make the dies, a 50 t press, and more heat than one can poke a hot stick at. The current plan is to have a male die the final shape of the boss, with the f...

Looking good Mac.

Instead of removing material from the bottom, could you not include spacers at the top, just below where the taper ends?

Otherwise, you you have a nice sturdy table for your grinder to evenly remove material over a platen?

Spitballing alert: I'd love to see a heatmap of hammer strikes on some plates. Especially in this case the metacarpal and the cuff. I guess I should have been more specific. I would have all of the parts attached permanently. I used the term "waist lame" to mean that large saddle shaped part that you had given the unlikely name to. You would definitely want leathers near the center line of all the lames. Also, I think it would ...
