Your opponent is also permitted to grab your spear haft. Carry and practise drawing and striking with a seax (or whatever a knife is called in your century). It's worth mentioning that while rivetted does stand up much better it does still get moth holes and they're more of a pain to fix since you then need rivets and a setting tool as well as links and unless you made the whole lot yourself you may have to shop around to find a good match.

The royal rumble's a good idea but why stop there - any of the circle/last man standing type fights work with until x number of wins too which adds a tactical element. If your local hot stick is sitting on 4 wins and it's first to 5 you just know they're going to be getting a very spirted next round...

I would guess the biggest problem is the fit of your current armour, so I would suggest either something that adjusts well such as lamellar or using a breastplate. There was also a variation where it is everyone vs everyone BUT if the fighter who beat you is in turn beaten then you return to the field. Which means that it won't end untill one fighter has beaten every single other fighter without a loss. How did I forget that, it made me think of another forma...

Keiran, While making an axe head is not actually too hard if you've never made one and never used one it wouldn't be too hard to get a sub optimal result.
