Re: I wanna be a VIKING
(seriously, wearing riveted mail without padding is not comfortable, much less fighting in it Mail, while superfluous for us, I disagree on both accounts, speaking from practical experience. I don't wear anything under my mail other than a tunic (and a kidney belt); other than the weight (about 20l...

Re: "History Channel’s Vikings is just as brutal as GoT"
Yup. While it would have been cool to see a bit more historically accurate stuff, as a show it seems decent, and there were enough things in there that were close to being right that it was actually kinda cool. It's fiction, set in a loosely historic context. I can look past the bad stuff and enjoy ...

When I can afford it, I intend to strive for this endeavor. For now, my finances do not allow me to make the investment, neither for the armor nor the trip. Much, I suspect, like many others who would seek this honor.

Re: 2012...Show us your kits
Eventually, yes. The crusader is gonna be a slow build to (SCA) perfection. I'd always wanted to do it, but when I was asked to Champion Her Majesty (TRMs were doing a 12thC impression) I found some impetus to get the big part (helm) done. The surcoat basically covered the rest of my usual 'Viking' ...

This was the final version of my kit as Queen's Champion to Her Majesty Julianna de Pardieu (I'm on the right, but as an aside, on the left is Ulrich of Wiard, who also posts here on the archive, and both helmets were made by Gian di Fauro, who also posts here). Re: I want to be a Valsgard era Scandinavian (680 AD)
I recall hearing/reading somewhere that there is a thought that the Valsgarde/Vendel/Sutton Hoo helms were old when they were buried, and thus possibly legacy items. Can anyone confirm/deny this, hopefully with some documentation? I'm in the process of building a Vendel/Valsgarde inspired kit, but a...

Hope it doesn't add to your being down, but Gian carved his himself - not one of yours I'm afraid. I have one I made from one of Eirik's (yours?) blanks, but didn't use it this year.

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA
We camp on the corner between East Royal and Yama Kamaniri; the only thing that ever bothers us is the end of war karaoke/sing alongs or whatever is going on over there, and only because it's blatantly modern stuff - this year it was 80's night or something. Was just a little distracting when Kriegs...

What's her secret to keeping her chain mail drape from eating her hair alive?!?! I have to be as delicate as a surgeon when the mail comes off, and that is braided and wearing a coif! She normally wears a ponytail under an arming cap. The flowing mane isn't free like that under her helmet. ;)

I haven't heard anything about it being legal in the Midrealm yet. It'll be interesting to see if our KEM allows it. As I recall, the general consensus after experimental use was a 'no,' due to a lot of breakage. Sharp, jaggedy, pointy breakage. I never used it, but fought guys who did.

Greetings, My shire is hosting an event for the first time in over 6 years. Since the last event, we've nearly disbanded as a shire. There was a 6 month stretch when I was the sole meeting attendant. We've slowly grown (yay!) to the point now where we can reasonably host an event again (also yay!)....
