You know what the most awesome part of the SCA is? The wonderful people who insist on telling you how to play your game.

Make sure you are using a 5mm nut. The threads will seem off if you are trying to use a standard nut. I had the exact correct nut. The nuts threaded right on without any issues on SOME, and on others, only went on maybe half way. I checked for cross threading, size, everything. After inspecting the ...

Re: Caid Crown List
My one and only crown I challenged Duke Guy. (For the non Caidans, he is a Caidan legend of heroic proportions) I strutted up (make sure you strut, but don't George Jefferson it. ) and interrupted the convo he was having with Duke Ivan and challenged his ass. He whomped me but neither he nor Ivan ev...

Re: Caid Crown List
This will be my first crown tourney. Now the big question, Who should I choose for my first fight (and why)? Stride boldly to the front of the line and pick the biggest, baddest duke up there. Die gloriously. Why? Because it's bold. Because that duke will never forget your name. Because it's bold!

Re: Who makes vervelles?
I used icefalcons steel threaded vervells. I took them to my grinder and ground the sides flat (the vervells are round/spherical) so they looked a little nicer, then sanded and polished them. They work great. The only thing about them is that the threads on them are.... cheap. Some nuts went right o...

Re: Interesting & Fun Tourney Format
Sounds good! I love round robin or bear pit style tourneys where you get all you can fight. Conditioning really shows by the end. Nothing worse than a double elim and done. Some of us like double elim. It's a traditional tourney format for many sports and games. I do like the occasional bearpit or ...

The only way you are going to make a helmet without making a shit ton of noise is to buy the top premade. Even then, you're going to have to pound out the lower half.

Ironmonger, Ironmonger, Ironmonger. Munitions Bascinet, with grill $135. Bomb-proof. Made to size. Cheap. Safe. The helmet itself is OK for SCA. They tend to run a bit small so get the xlarge. I had one. Made a grill for it but never wore it on the field. Eventually I sold it. But it seemed heavy enough.

If money isn't an issue I would have more than one. For practice/regular use I would use linen linen and linen. For tourney I would use silk for the shell.

Re: "Inspirational Equality" returns
Fuckit, lets do war crowns. Isn't that what got Aveloc R&D'd? I *LOVE* the idea of a Crown run along the lines of a Warlord tourney - beat a fighter, they are now on your side, now you and your new guy go and fight another pair - if you win, they are now on your side, and so on... It won't happen, ...

Re: How much do you charge for labor?
These discussions keep coming up over and over again. The one thing that I'd like to point out is that what you need to charge to make it worth your while and what you can get people to pay are two very different things. You not only need to figure out how much you need to charge, but whether what ...

Re: Heavy Fighting: Questions From a Confused Outsider
The SCA will never be as a whole a vehicle for accurate historical re creation. It was never that. It won't ever be that. Get over it already. If you want something more authentic go do it or start it. Plenty of people have. If you want more authenticity in the SCA stop bitching about it and cultiv...

No matter what I am doing, making or fixing, I charge a minimum of 20 dollars an hour for my time. I should charge more. I don't itemize, unless it's something like replacement parts in a PC I am not making a profit on. If you ask me to make you a pair of shoes I will give you a price for what you w...

Re: Chain maille
Wear a little padding and the maile works just fine. It takes up enough of the blow so you don't get broken. Whether or not one sees mail as acceptable depends on how much or how little they want to feel the blow. Legally you'll need a kidney belt or some such. I have a linen "vest" that has pockets...

I didn't sew or tack my rawhide edging on. First practice I went to and the grass was all wet. I laid my shield down between fights as we do, and the rawhide absorbed water and deformed. Eventually it shrunk, ripped and fell off.
