Re: Byzantine military clothing
Arms and Armour of the Warrior Saints: Tradition and Innovation in Byzantine Iconography (843–1261) by Piotr Grotowski is excellent resource, much better that Timothy Dawson's work, Imho.

Re: The Armour from Tarnovo - coat of plates or eastern armo
We can see this in coins, seals, written sources where western helmets and full armour appearance that can't seen on frescoes or only part of it only legs or arms and also the orthodox art try to copy the old roman style so really ... is not very relaible It really depends when and where. For example...

Re: The Armour from Tarnovo - coat of plates or eastern armo
As far as i know orthodox art is not relaible at all .... Actually its very reliable. While indeed there seems to be some stylization, for the most we can clearly see evolution and change in arms and armament that is consistent with the development of the said arms and armour. The clearest way you ...

Re: Byzantine Armor source and ?
There is a find in Preslav or Pliska of a lamellae that is actually covered by a thin bronze sheet. As to why its always brown - nobody knows. It could be some sort of oxidizing, or this might not even be lamellar or scale, but something else, it might also be something covered with natural colored ...

Re: The Armour from Tarnovo - coat of plates or eastern armo
Vitez, The armour is most probably from a western type Coat of plates, although the reconstruction that the author of this article proposes is not very good. It is possible that it is something locally made, in any case there are quite a few images from the period that can be interpreted as depictin...

Re: Groups in Turkey
There are a few in Bulgaria - I am from Chigot - we do 12-14th century bulgarians/byzantines and the battle of Varna in 1444, and there is Modus Vivendi, who deal with 10-13th century outremer/byzantine and one rus guy. There are some people in Serbia. In Romania there are also a few groups, but the...

Re: Eastern European helmets.
I'll fill in for Bulgaria in the timeframe XII-XIV centuries. The information is also relevant for parts of Serbia and the Byzantine empire. Art generally shows two types of helmets - kettlehats, not unlike western-European ones were worn in the 14th century example: http://s53.radikal.ru/i141/0904/...

Re: Byzantine Armour
It was Qaloja, after all, who crushed Baldwin and the crusaders at Adrianople, thus effectively ending the short-lived latin empire and allowing the Byzantines to claw their way back into power (albeit much weakened, and relying upon Ottoman military support, and as you've mentioned, look where tha...

Somenone a bit back mentioned about the distinct look of the camp filled with ropes, and that the painter wouldn't miss it. Andrew, if I understand your point correctly, you say that lamellar plates were connected via metal links, and not fabric or leather threads. I suppose if this were the situation, than there would have been some rings remaining among with the plates. And as far as I am aware there are no such finds,...

As for the circular lamellar. It's quite interesting, because there are three or four images of such both from Serbia and Bulgaria, all of them from around 14-th 15-th century. I personally belive it's some kind of artistic interpretation. The guy with the diagonal thingies is also interesting, as t...
