Re: Education for a smithing future

My suggestion, as far as higher education goes, would be some form of business management or accounting. It's not only hugely beneficial for running your own business, but its helpful to have something not trade specific to fall back on should the trade not work out(say you damage your shoulder or c...

Re: Lord of the Rings , Witch King "armor" rust/rugged loo

My suggestion is to throw it in a bbq pit, heat it up for awhile, then sprits it with vinegar in different spots while it is still on the pit. It will develop crusty spots that flake off easily with scotch brite pads. Then just rub it down with oil and the black will get very dark.

Re: Question on ventilating a garage

I gave it a shot with for ten minutes with everything closed up and a CO detector. It's no good, and the detector started going off about 5 minutes in. The garage isn't large enough and is well insulated. I'll give it another shot today with an exhaust fan in the window. Because my garage is partial...

Question on ventilating a garage

I'm running a vertical weed burner forge for raising, but I'm in a residential neighborhood and can't raise without making neighbors angry. Currently I'm pretty much using the forge for annealing. I heat the piece outside, then rush back in, close the garage door, and work for a few minutes. It's pr...

Re: Kastenbrust great bascinet(image heavy)

The print I would be interested in speculation of what we are seeing with the helmet slightly left of center. The image of the fragment I would greatly love to find out more about. I pulled this off a foreign language site several years ago and have it cataloged as "1435-1435 Italian Helm Fragment",...

Re: Kastenbrust great bascinet(image heavy)

Ok, so here is what I've got. My understanding is that the earliest known close helms were from the end of the 15th century. Much of what we see in artwork depicting the earlier 15th century, or referencing older armour, seems to show great bascinets and sallets or bascinets with bevors. Capwell wro...

Re: Kastenbrust great bascinet(image heavy)

Thought I'd bump this up to the top, as I've begun working on the helmet. I spent last night looking through some old photos, sparked an idea, and started sketching and making a 3d model. I took today off work and went ahead and make full size profiles and started raising the skull. Well, I made a c...

Re: Most Historical (and Impressive) Panoply for $2,500?

On the path of making vs buying, I'll throw in my two cents. I transitioned to ww2 reenactments out of availability rather than passion. There is nothing you can make yourself to get started. I've spent shit loads of money on uniforms and weapons, and have a garage full of Volkswagen and tank parts ...

Re: Quickie build: halloween skull faced sallet for my 5yo

Schreiber, yeah, he's seen most of it. He loves anything zombie or skeleton. There is not much movement of the metal. I haven't done much in the way of relief before, and haven't worked on armour in almost ten years, so it was a fun experiment. Kinda sparked my need to make something more, so maybe ...

Quickie build: halloween skull faced sallet for my 5yo

He wanted to be a skeleton from army of darkness, so I offered to build him a helmet. I only spent a few hours on it, so it's something he can play with after Halloween without having invested huge amount of time. It's 20g, hot worked with a two part welded skull. I thought I'd be saving some, but i...

I just wanted to see if anyone has any further input, images, etc. It has been three years and this helmet still baffles me. I really want to start on this, and I'm thinking I may just get some steel and go at it, seeing what shape comes out.

I've tried a number of things with GIMP to bring out more detail, but the quality of the picture prevents anything new being seen. Were these pictures possibly ever in a book? I seem to be bringing out some vague ghost lettering, but nothing detailed enough to interpret as a word.

Re: When looking for someone to weld cast iron I should....?

If you are going to braze, you need something that runs at under 800 degrees. Anything much higher than that will cause all kinds of problems with the cast iron. I've used argo 49h (from johnson matthey brazing supplies) with excellent results when brazing shotput balls for planishing stakes.
