Video of the Hungerford Effigy
Hello all I wanted to try something new and have begun videoing effigies to get a better record of what I/we can see. In the film I am burbling along about what I think I can see, but that's why the good Lord in his wisdom invented mute buttons. Hopefully this will prove to be a useful resource over...

Re: Couple of videos of how I rough out greaves and cuisse
Keegan, Woodswork Thanks for your feedback and kind words.
I'm certain there is more to the cuisse than I recognise and have been taught, every time I think I am getting a handle on things it always turns out there is so much more that I didn't see.
The bent pipe stake is a great piece of kit.

Couple of videos of how I rough out greaves and cuisse
Hello all It's been an age since I've been on and I've been enjoying catching up with some old threads and reading some new one. I thought I'd share two videos I did recently, the first is of me roughing out a greave front and the second is the same of a cuisse with a few design pointers that I thin...

Raising armour like chocolate pudding?
Hi A little wile ago I was fortunate enough to get some handling sessions with a sallet, armet and a great helm at the Royal Armouries. The first thing that struck me was how the inside feel to each helm was lumpy, much like a chocolate pudding. WHen I raise bits and pieces the insides are generally...

Re: What are these point laces for?
The tomb is attributed to Bartholemew Burghersh 1355, but the effigy is clearly later than that. The effigy appears to have replaced the original 1355 effigy sometime during the 15th century. I've managed to find a slightly longer image to help, but you can still clearly see the lacing points on the...

Hello all I've been studying an effigy in Lincoln and wondered what these point laces are for? Still being very much the student of the 15th century, can anyone help enlighten me? Apologies for the facebook link, it was the simplest way for me to get the pic up. If there's any problem, just pop alon...

Silk/Velvet Covered Straps?
Hi there A little while ago I ran into the idea that some armour straps may have been silk or velvet covered. The idea is not without merit as far as I can tell. The wealthy in the mid to slightly later seem to have gon to some tremendous lengths to cover up or decorate their armour with vrysoun on ...

Hello folks, I've been lurking for a good while and figured it must be about time to try and give something back again. Re: Hood or coif under helm?
I think I can see the difficulty, I had convinced myself, early on, that the scale was hanging froma self hinge, making it all but impossible to figure the rest out. Replace the self hinge with vervelles and the turn on the scales and everything clears up. Using that solution I still see the part of...

Hood or coif under helm?
Hello all I wonder if you might be able to help me again? A quick question about padding. I'm looking at a mid 14th century helm similar to the Leverick 1350 (pictured) and wondered about the padding underneath. I am assuming that the helm is resting on a full maille coif, presumably the padding und...

Lots of top advice here. To add my couple of bits to the list rather than reiterate a lot of the above. Turn your phone off and stay off social media while at work. Material covered straps?
Hello all Just another quick question. I have recently read, without any evidence, that a lot of mid 14th century armour straps would have been silk or linen covered. It would certainly seem a good fit with the high status of the armour from the period, but I haven't heard of it before but like the ...

Hourglass with hinged cuff help ... please
Hello all I've painted myself into a bit of a corner. Talking with someone recently I mentioned about hourglass gauntlets that had a (sort of) hinged cuff. Sometime ago I saw about half a dozen effigies clearly showing them. I even built a couple of pairs based upon the hinge that sits where the bra...

It's a little tricky to see in this pic, but look at the rib in the arm pit, they've botched the turn in a couple of places, but we still look and marvel at it. I hadn't seen that one before so thanks, added to the list
The one I am thinking of specifically had the buckles tucked in under the spaulder and barely visible above the rerebrace, their 'discovery' came as quite a shock.
Thanks for the above though, great stuff.

I took the picture in St Denis some years ago. I will try and post the rest later. Its a bit earlier than the Leverick effigy but close enough for consideration.
