Re: So who isn't going to Pennsic and why?
Some have a XXX Pennsic, and some like me have a Pennsic that is more in line with a Scooby Doo episode. At Pennsic you will star in the movie you want to star in IMO. What if you want to star in a XXX Scooby Doo episode? (I have been to Pennsic many times. Although it has always been fun, it hasn'...

I wear zoombang shorts under chainmail (shirt goes to my knees).
I really don't recommend it. It works for me, but I have a high pain tolerance (and I try to not get legged too often )

Re: Rough on Rattan
I usually have 3-4 swords made and ready to fight with at a time. Typically I save the newest, best condition sword for use at events only, the rest are practice swords. Practice swords just get re-taped until they are totally dead. I see no point in using new rattan for practice. I seem to hit hard...

And yes, either bring the cloak or be prepared to purchase one on site when you arrive...some (most) years it gets down to the low 50's on at least one evening at Pennsic. I have only been five times, but I have never needed or wanted a cloak at Pennsic. A couple years ago it actually got cold enou...

Re: Key things and recent lessons about traveling to Pennsic
In general your carry on is your bugout bag. Secondary ID, meds, cash, contact info for the local embasy, electronics, pretty much everything you can't pickup at the local mega mart. This is another reason I took my helmet, chainmail and gauntlets as carry on. The rest of my fighting stuff would su...

Re: Key things and recent lessons about traveling to Pennsic
You can save weight by taking your armor as carry on. When I flew to Pennsic this year, I had my helmet, chainmail and gauntlets in my carry on bag. My bag has wheels, so the weight didn't bother me. Doing this put all my heaviest and most valuable items in my carry on. When going through security i...

Re: Spear and Shield Combat Interest
Cedric's joke is that the most effective "short spear" and shield form is to put a thrusting tip on your sword and use it frequently. This. In all seriousness, I HAVE actually fought Spear and Shield quite a few in a multi-weapons tournament. It sucks, particularly if you have to use it against oth...

Re: Spear and Shield Combat Interest
The best spear for SCA spear and shield work is about 30-36" long. In addition to the thrusting tip, it should also have an edge (marked with tape of a contrasting color to the rest of the weapon) on two sides of the shaft.

Re: round shield/rawhide edging
I didn't sew or tack my rawhide edging on. First practice I went to and the grass was all wet. I laid my shield down between fights as we do, and the rawhide absorbed water and deformed. Eventually it shrunk, ripped and fell off. I always put at least 3 or four rivets securing the rawhide to the pl...

Re: Round shield handle?
Close. On my shields, there is no defined "top". It gets flipped randomly every time I pick it up, which spreads damage out over the whole shield instead of always having shots hitting the same spot.AwP wrote:When the top edge gets too beat up, you just flip it upside down.

It's also slightly offset to give room to the finger knuckles and gaunt, while the thumb side of the handle needs less room. Swete's pic is of a round for a righthander. Asbrand appears, from his handle contouring, to be a leftie. See where the base-of-thumb relief is? You can get a lot more life o...

There have not been problems with them on rattan that I know of. Since 2" spear tips have been allowed, I can count on one hand the number of rattan spears I have seen, yet fiberglass spears are everywhere. Somehow, I think this has more to do with the lack of problems then some inherent property o...

Mail keeps itself clean. I'm making a shirt now with rings that are bright orange from rust. By the time I insert a link and complete a row, the abrasion from neighbouring links has already rubbed it clean so it shines. Have you sweated in it yet? Fighting in this (on the An Tir team) was one of the big highlights of Pennsic for me this year.
I am not normally a fan of "melee" tournaments, but this was awesome. Lots of fun, hard fighting. Very glad I got to participate.
