Re: German bellows faced sallet - First full fitting assemb

Here is the full assembly of the major components. Adjusted the height of the mandible, and the visor adjustment and fitting. The visor works now, and the good news is that the closure pins are going to be a lot less complicated than I had feared they were going to be. The visor will raise and frict...

Matilda of Flanders - Clothing, What did she wear?

Hey there, I have AdBlock on my laptop, which is in all other aspects perfectly wonderful, but in this case it is blocking the source of that wonderful company that sells patterns to historical costuming. Anyone got that recorded and might be able to send me a link? Further, what would a well dresse...

Re: German bellows faced sallet - vision vs breathing With P

This is not all my work, I am working with Paul Bardebes out here in New Zealand, Bell Block residence... :)

I'm helping, assisting, and learning at a rapid pace. He's a bit broken at this point, so I'll be carrying on with most of the finishing work now.

Re: German bellows faced sallet - vision vs breathing With P

Obviously, having the breathes on the top helps with resistance to cavalry lances. If you want to see your rein hand, though (or what's in front of your feet, in your case), you put them lower. It would be a good idea to forge your bellows flutes higher; it will improve your optical geometry, so to...

Here is the Flickr album where the pictures are. https://www.flickr.com/photos/41945693@N07/sets/72157649823289071/ The first picture should be the helm without the drape on it, the others are examples I have found. German bellows faced sallet - First full fitting assembly

Bellows visors and the piercings they have. I've got fair number of pictures, and the piercings of the visors appear to be somewhat random. There is an eye-slot, and various other rows of piercings along the horizontal lines of the bellows folds. I'm in a rush at the moment. have to get to work, and...

I didn't see: Wear a non-flammable apron. Clothes, or fabric aprons catch fire when struck by hot stuff. My personal tally is two shirts and a cotton apron with a nice scorched-edge hole in it. I'm stubborn apparently. :) Sparks ARE fire. I do always wear double layer hearing protection though, earp...

Would it not be more lucrative to secure this locally in NZ? The same bow here as can be had in the US is twice to three times the price, even making allowance for currency exchange. With the chance of being able to get twice the bow for the same money spent, and have it delivered by RelativeMail i...

WTB - 2nd Hand Bow - 35-60# Right Handed

Just what it sounds like... My parents are coming over to New Zealand just after the new year and I would very much like a bow. I'd like a single piece, not a take down. I'd go for any brand, I have no preference other than no completely fibreglass. I would also go for a long bow, or a traditional s...

WTB - (medievaloid) Boots suitable for fighting.

TO explain more fully... I've seen boots of the sort that I want before, but not recently. What I want is a hybrid, something that I could put sabatons over, but that also have a sole with molded grip, like a Vibram product. Black leather, and a booth that I can walk across wet grass in and not end ...

Re: Making an armor stand?

This is Pellham, my armour stand. I put wheels on him, and tailored him to my dimensions so the armour "hangs" in roughly the right proportions. The arms hinge to be in different locations at the shoulders and elbows. There are now "feet" that the sabatons fit on, and that the greaves lock around. T...

Re: BOTN Great Helm in progress *pics*

I'd rather have to drill out and replace a few rivets every 5 years than fight with an oversized helm every week. Mild steel and even stainless steel rivets on helmet get chopped up by steel swords. Based on what I've seen with the great helm that I use for ACL steel fighting you'll need to replace...

Re: Making fingered-clamshell gauntlets

The best way I have found to put gloves into clamshells is to cut a leather tab that fits inside the fingertip plate that is wide enough to cover the index, middle and ring fingers of my hands in the gloves I am working with. The pinky finger is too short to easily connect to this tab. Stitch the ti...

Re: Breaths in a Visor - Is this Decent or just Crazy?

Try one to two rows first, if you need more add extra rows later. I was surprised how much extra vision drilling the bottom of the occulars on my klapvisor made, you may not need anywhere near as many holes. I did just that, cut just one row just underneath the existing eye-slit. The increase in vi...

Two variations. One with the straight lines guiding the breaths is the first design, the second one has curved lines that more closely match the lines of the helm. @ Sean You have some excellent points, thank you, especially for the process. The problem with horizontal breaths is that they are dumb when you consider how your eyes work. You can try it yourself. Get a bit of paper, fold it in half, and cut a series of thin slots from the folded edge so that it l...

Less than a 1/4 inch all along the rim.

This is more for vision, but a close second for airflow, which is the reason for the line above the eye-slot.

Breaths in a Visor - Is this Decent or just Crazy?

The white lines make this a bit shocking, but I desperately need more air and light in there. When cut the slots would fade into more of a "texture" than as obvious as this. Vertical slots I find emphasise action and movement better than horizontal ones. Holes in a helmet must be 5mm or less in an A...
