A good way to make a gambeson that fits well is to find a suit jacket that fits well. Goodwill, salvation army, St. Vicents... are good sources for starters. Gut the jacket, take off the sleeves, collar, pockets and lapels and lining. You should be left with a shell that still fits well. Take measur...

I find that preemptive actions help out a lot. I wear long pants, gloves, a denim apron and when things get really messy, a cloth hat with the brim cut off to keep the hair clean. If you keep your hands moisturized it’s a lot easier to get the crud off afterwards. Check with auto parts stores, the...

Any patterns been posted lately?

Just wondering, it looks like the last time someone posted a pattern was over a year ago.

Kinda sad for the best armor site on the web.

I'm willing to kick in a pointy elbow cop if someone else comes up with something.

A bowling ball works good as the back side when planishing. The large surface area make it easy to hold the piece with one hand and hammer with the other. In addition the "rebound" you get from the slightly springy surface helps speed things up and save some energy.

I would round the edges on the lames just a bit, they look almost like the corners are 90 degrees = sharp edges. Same thing on the bottom edges of the demi. You dont want that driven into your flesh.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I decide to lose the current bar grill, finish the brow/nasal and cheek pieces and then worry about a grill. >I take it the plate extension at the back will be hidden by an aventail. Pics of ostrogothic helm 60% completed

This is a long term project for me. I am attempting to make a helm suitable for SCA combat that would work for an ostrogothic (6th c) persona. I still need to add the cheekpieces, mail and the nasal/browpiece. You can't tell in the pics but the browband is engraved with a floral pattern all the way ...

I used the aluminum stuff during a demo at a flea market. It really kicks ass for repairing aluminum/ pot metal items.

I don't think I would trust the stuff for steel though.

heavy duty pallet binding works pretty good to mount the pin on. You can usually find it in dumpsters around warehouses and loading docks.

I have two pairs of greaves, one gutter and one full case. I wear them over a fairly soft leather boot with no problems. Of course it's in the SCA so I don't get hit there too often.
