On the other hand, the Indian-made abortions are a horror to both man and horse, with a STEEL framework, rather than the proper wooden tree! Lucky has a pretty normal back and my "Indian Made Abortion" (I like that!) bridges him to the tune of about 3"-4" and the area where it d...

In addition to our reproduction saddles, we use Alta Esquela NOTE: Beware of the cheap Indian import saddles offered inexpensively on Ebay, as they are not made well, do not fit and can be harmful to your horses' back. Zaldi and Ludomar are the name brands you want to look for. I've been looking at...

Here's what a proper 16th Century War Saddle looks like, BTW. Note that it is provided with "bolsters" behind the thighs to help provide stability and a firm seat. Someone mentioned my saddle earlier....it is a Zaldi Camarguesa. I've ridden in various Western saddles, various English sadd...

The first pic Gwen posted has so much wrong in it. The guy using his horses head to balance his lance on is truly horrible. The guy on the other side of the tilt with his lance heading straight for the other horses head!!!! I'm sorry guys, this is just not good enough. The thought of you using bals...

LESS talkie MORE joustie I specifically walked up to the joust to shoot the balsa jousting that was supposed to start "in 20 minutes". 2 hours later I was freezing and gave up as there had been no balsa jousting at all. Only tube jousting. I finally gave up (after the 2 hours) and left af...

As for the talkie, I was just filling in to kill time while Eule was arming up. As you saw with the tube jousting, I don't take a whole lot of time making runs For better or worse, it is always a bit of a cluster at Gulf Wars trying to get folks organized. A really great target for a quintain (whether a spinner, a tipper, or one with a spring arm) is an old, SMALL, cast iron skillet. Virtually indestructable and pretty cheap (especially at flea markets or garage sales). What a great idea! How did you attached the skillet? I would think that with that...

These changes make them perform WAY better than with the older softer material and the shallower socket. I will agree that the newer coronels are much better than the earlier ones. I've been using the same one on my quintain lance for the past four months with several hundred strikes on a mid weigh...

Where I usually joust one is awarded 10 points for unhorsing your opponent. IJA/IJL does not award points for unhorsing an opponent. SCA is laissez-faire so far, so I thought I would ask... The current foam jousting rules don't allow it, so it is unlikely that the balsa rules will. ...and don't foo...

Plastic really has no place on the Jousting Field. Truth be told, I'd love Alexis to state "no plastic on the jousting field"...then, as a Marshal I would be justified in refusing plastic Walmart garage pavilions, plastic water bottles, plastic lawn chairs, etc. Hmm...even cell phones! .....

A COP over maille I would consider sufficient protection. However, the COP must be of metal construction IMO. A plastic COP might crack under the kind of impact of a balsa strike and would certainly not stand up to a sleeve strike if the balsa broke on the target and the metal had a secondary hit o...

we don't get a serious injury or worse and have the whole program shut down. Given the sketchy insurance climate we live in here, a catastrophic injury to an SCA person balsa jousting would effectively shut down ALL balsa jousting in the US. I ride with some hard-hitting folk. (WCJA/FreeLancers) I agree that perhaps leather breastplates are too light for 3' balsa tips. A decent socket hit might cut right through leather? Pretty much anything would be ok for mounted (crested helm) combat with the 1" balsa cannes, but lance passes m...

Balsa Jousting at Gulf Wars

I talked to my wife about going. Will there be balsa jousting there?
