A bigger picture would have been better To get patterned rivets they are usually either stamped with a die or filed to shape. Brass bits that seem to be part of the steel probably are - they are quite likely gilded. the black is *probably* a heat blue, I am unaware of any medieval chemical finishes....

The problem with this is that you need something to attach it to, like some leather. And a half hide will run you $50+ (around here). not at all, a length of drill or similar from spotlight will run you to alot less. Yu dont *have* to use leather for COPs yes its more accuratebut loaner kits are si...

Breast and back, greaves, vambraces. Take my advice and go a COP for your breast and back and splint for your greaves and vambs. The COP will teach you patterning, dishing, rivet setting etc and all 3 arre not too difficult. Splint for the vambs and greaves as a realistic option for a first timer. P...

Aww.. you don't need Hal to send out copies of that one. Just look at the pic, it's simplicity itself. If my armouring manuals were still circulating, patterns for that style of helm were in the first volume. I put that out like... 20 years ago. Really though, going from Hal's pic, you should be ab...

The difference being where you put the buckle It sounded like Cet was suggesting putting the buckle at the top and startingt he strap under the arm - which from my squiring day I assure you is a pain...

Nice to see an Australian face on the AA. Did you go to Abbey this year? I saw that OLR was there in force as usual. I thought the after event camping was a little less enthusiastic this year.
That photo was from sunday's tournament at Abbey so yes
You'll have to come find me at HA

The straps to the shoulders don't need to be very tight - just enough to keep the BP from flopping forward too much while allowing it to move with your arm motions a bit: too tight and you get excessive bruising on your chest at the arm openings. And at the collarbones. I would runt he strap from t...

Looks good, not sure about the lip on the bottom lame and it looks like you havent spent enough time sanding to get a consistent polish when you polished them (I can see linishing marks in places) For a second try these are fantastic, I wish my second try at armour was this good. IIRC there is a section when you transfer money that asks what it's for ie: payment for goods/services. A standard transfer shouldn't attract sales tax. *goes and looks* PP lets you send to kinds of money, payments for purchaces and personal payments. a personal payment shouldn't be sales taxed as i...

That Zweihammers Valsgrad-6 kit looks amazing. I wish I could get ahold of that pattern, I could maybe throw it in a CNC plasma cutter in a month or two and cut my parts, if not I do not mind doing it by hand. Talbot sells a Valsgarde 7 pattern which requires little dishing - just the latticework i...

Halberds review
A few months ago I ordered a whole bunch of new tools from Halberds to bring me another step closer to 'completeing' my armoury, a few financial screwups on my part later [this is the second time this has happened and I'm really annoyed with myself for doing it] and the money was finally sent to Hal...

There are some early-ish 16th century brigandine work arms extant, no 15th century ones, however, I have seen brigandine-work tassets (early 16th century), which are identical to examples seen in art of the 1480's, but no brigandine-work legs to my knowledge, at least none found to date. I've seen ...

Buy a bottle of coldblue, it should take you 5-10min to blacken them if you clean the gaunts properly first

So use your drill press. Those boys can gear down to where the bit turns like the world. Okay, the world like a desk globe pushed by one hand. But S L O W as twist drill bits work. 600RPM on a drillpress is plenty fast enough. I tend to use Sutton Tools - not the viper bits but the other special co...

Hi Pitbull, I have found the propane does not weld good for me. It seems to heat OK but it will not wet the metal for welding. Can do a pair in stainless with steel rivets in this style for $150 + $30 shipping. Would need your shoes for custom fitting (So factor in .au shipping for your shoes). You'd have to wait about 4 weeks though before I'd have time to start on them. IMO Hals are a hell of alot nicer if your going to g...

What I did was more of a fold over than a roll. Are fold overs used or strictly rolls ? And getting the right angle on a point when folding for the two edges to meet square, what degree would you suggest ? I also just aquired a thousand tube rivets but don't think they are the best for armour! 1 Go...
