I'll second what asteely said!!!!!

That 50-100 bucks you think you're going to "save" by going cheap?
Price out a trip to the doctor/ER, the pain, and the downtime of a broken finger or two.

There's 2 things to NOT skimp on- Helms and gauntlets.

Christian Tobler's books....

My gal bought me "Fighting with the German Longsword" for my birthday a few months back. LOVE IT! Working with the way I approach SCA greatsword has been a blast, since I already did a fair amount of what was covered in the book, I just never knew the technical "how and why" of i...

" What is the point of having the row of 'dots' around the waist?" From personal experience, having them would be nice for ventilation on those times when you're in melee and you're really gassy. Otherwise it just seeps up underneath your breastplate. Once it hits the gorget, you're done.

I always use diluted (with water, and add the acid to the water, NOT the other way around!!!) nitric acid for browning/russeting...throw some wrought iron nails in it until it stops reacting.
After that I rub boiled linseed oil on, and it's good to go.

My rule of thumb when working aluminum is to stay away from anything darkish grey, with a brushed finish.
Some signs are like that, and they are REALLY brittle.

Don't know the how or why of it, it's just something I have noticed.

Renn Wax works well too, spread it on good, buff it a bit with a rag, then hit it with a heat gun to "set" it.
BE CAREFUL WITH THE HEAT GUN.
You only want enough heat to melt the way, not heat the armour to the point where it messes with whatever strapping you may have on it.....

Yes, square can be a pain in the butt. However, with square, a bit of dremelwork can make the welds just disappear and make it look like it's one solid piece, because you're going "flat to flat" and you can make some seriously smooth transitions between the bars. Yup, it takes time, but th...
