I don't think Sasuke has the SCA fingers worked out yet......
I've been waiting for him to figure out a set with "mitten" style lames for SCA combat.
Soon, hopefully......(grin)

I think the reasoning behind some of it is this - Youth combat is touch kill. We had kids in Eisental who were over armored and didn't feel squat. It was like watching kids play cowboys and indians. "I got you" "Nuhuh!" "Yeah I did!" "No...." Plate armor and boffer weapons just don't work well witho...

Bedlam- That's all well and good. I'm not talking about blowing shots off, I'm talking about getting shots to stick. Some folks are of the opinion that if it doesn't stick, just throw harder. I take responsibility for my calibration, you are absolutely correct, it is MY responsibility. Just as other...

I have to watch my calibration in my breastplate. I made it to be as period as possible in design...and it works. A breastplate that lets you get whacked in, but you don't feel much..... A breastplate that makes most spear thrusts skip right off. Imagine that... It's 16g stainless, 1 pc, w faulds an...

Very good points, all. However, how many "college age" folks are members of the chivalry? I see this all the time- A new person shows up at fighter practice, thinks "Wow cool!" They decide to join up and make armor. They make the armor. Alot of times this armor, made by someone brand spanking new wh...

Well spoken Sarnac. My problem is this- A member of the Chiv/Royalty is pretty much a figurehead for the SCA and it's ideals, it's what folks aspire to be. AND The SCA, as a non-profit organization, is supposed to be educational, right? So when the "figureheads" are running around in kidney belts an...

"doesn't matter as long as they can fight in it? " Based on what I have seen over the years, if you change the word "fight" to "win" in the above statement, you pretty much have it. That being said, I feel if you wish to portray a knight in a medieval recreation society, you should look the part. A ...

Good explanation Irish! The group I used to fight with (Confed) was quite fond of such tactics. It's fun to be shock troops! They work best in res battles, the idea being- get some folks who feel froggy, throw them at a section of line. (Preferably a group/unit) Hit hard, hit as a group, momentum is...

Richard, I'm looking at it from the "intent" angle.... To explain my point- So someone kicks butt in the list, that's fine. How many of the people in a list are actually, for all purposes of intent, fighting FOR their King or Kingdom? Yeah, they bow in his direction, but how many are actually *fight...

The Doppelsoldier in me says, in a pike block, with skilled individuals, who train together all the time..... Great idea. In the SCA? Gimme a break! You just don't have the density of pike, or the masses trained to work in UNISON to support the use of such a length of pole. I'm betting they will bre...

Padding schmadding, alot of times it doesn't mean a thing. Most times the padding just adds MASS to a weapon. Yeah, it goes "squishy squishy" when the marshall squeezes it, so what? Foam seldom does that in a fast compression scenario. Especially when wrapped with tape that restricts air from leavin...

Yes, this rule should indeed die a quick death. Nothing like participating in a "medieval" organization that forbids one from using period techniques from period manuals in a period way. As long as you don't get excessive, there should be no problem It's all about weapon control, if you don't have i...

Well, like I said, it was years ago.... The ricasso rules weren't written like that yet, anyplace you COULD grip WAS counted as the grip. I've done this "flamberge" thing to a weapon. Looks great, TOTALLY unrealistic weight, balance, and feel. By the time you get thrpugh taping all that crap on your blade it adds so much mass it's not funny. Back in 93 I wanted a zwiehander with a ricasso I could use (with the lugs just in front of it...

I know that the Spanish used to soak their padded stuff in brine to stiffen it up. When fighting the natives of the new world the Spaniards often emerged looking like pincusions. Now, this is from 16th c. and later accounts, and the archers weren't using bodkin points, although the copper kaskian po...

That raises a very interesting observation I have made over about 9 years of SCA playing...... Most people who have a Japanese personna put more time and effort into a period (within reason) looking kit than folks with western personnas. At least it sure seems that way to me. (Note- I don't really k...

There are some kingdoms who will absolutely refuse to make anyone a MoA. What is so frustrating about it is you can have someone who is a really great person, great fighter, all around nice guy....and he will never be admitted to the order of the chivalry because he won't swear fealty. While Joe Rhi...

OK, and that is absolutely fine. But, some people take an oath, and what it represents more seriously than you do. I always kinda felt this way, but what cemented it for me was this- There was a certain king from the western part of the country some years back who came to pennsic. (For a time refere...
