Re: Forging deep vessels

Tom, great links. One of the related videos on youtube was this one of a modern helve hammer. Looks like a pretty simple build, and with a deeper hammer head it may be a good solution. Or is the issue that it is less efficient than other types of power hammers? Mac, if you ever manage to find your ...

Re: Study Session - North Carolina, June/July 2014

It does seem like June is the popular choice. If it did end up that I could make it, I do not mind the drive. If not, I'll drop you a line next time I'm in the area.

Sounds plausible. I seem to remember Patrick Thaden being involved. I don't think that is the thread I was thinking of, but it looks like a similar concept.

Re: Forging deep vessels

I've been thinking a lot about this subject myself. I have a fantasy in which I get a piece of land with a little river on it and make my own water powered trip hammer (and polishing mill, of course). I'll be following this discussion with great interest. On a similar note, wasn't there a thread on ...

Re: Study Session - North Carolina, June/July 2014

I'm definitely interested. I'll be doing bush work in Northern Ontario until late June, or early July, so I would only be able to go if for July 12-13 or 19-20. As far as items to study, I'm interested in pretty much anything armour related. I would like to get a look at your 15th century arm, and o...

Re: Questions about Rivets

Hey James, the barrel helm I fight in is riveted together with 1/8" nails. I think they call them d8 nails. I prefer the look of 1/8 rivets over 3/16. Like Konstantine said, keep the nail heads to the inside. This is because nail heads look silly on the outside. Although what I have done before is t...

Today was a "mental health" day. Joshua from Ottawa (Tableau) dropped by on his way from NYC to Pittsburgh. We talked shop, had lunch, and looked at books. Mac It was great to get to talk to you and see your shop. Thanks for entertaining me and answering all those questions. I'm definitely going to...

Re: Tableau's Gas Money Sale! Price drop & added Kettle Hat

I'm in Montreal now, but I'm heading towards New York city tomorrow. I'm not actually sure if I have the cutlass. Either I left it behind somewhere, or it's buried in my van. I'll go through the van carefully today and find out.

Hmm. It's not my video, but rather a friend's video. It's just a goofy video of people smashing plates and bottles over my head though. Maybe I will ask him if it could be uploaded on youtube.

Re: Building a Milanese Sallet - progress (pic heavy)

Thanks for the kind words, guys. Aussie, I stopped keeping track of how much time this took, especially since the work got so broken up with breaks in between work spanning weeks and months. After having built one, another one would be a little less intimidating, but still very hard. It took me a lo...

Re: Building a Milanese Sallet - progress (pic heavy)

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I know historic pieces had a lot of asymmetry and that makes me feel better. I guess it's a matter of learning to see armour the way our ancestors did. Which asymmetry is acceptable, and which is unacceptable? Hard to tell with my modern eye. I definitely need to study...

Tableau's Gas Money Sale! MORE Price drop

As I mentioned in this thread , I recently moved into my van and I have some stuff to sell. Some new, some used. First up: 14th century arms, based on a famous example in the Churburg armoury. 16g mild steel, 18g lames. Asking $ 240 +shipping. The vambrace is 10" from the centre of the elbow to the ...

Traveling Armourer

Hey guys, In keeping with my life goal of becoming a homeless hippy, I have recently moved into a van and began a new and exciting rubber trampin' life. Re: Recent work

If you look at the earlier pictures of the cop, you can see that it is deeper than it looks in this last picture. It's definitely weird though. The point of the cop is centred between the inside of the elbow and the start of the fan, but I later realized that the articulation on the original actuall...

Thanks Sean. I thought a lot about shoulder protection to go with the brig. I was mainly looking at King Rene's book of the Tournament for reference and ideas and that seems to show pauldrons, but I had also considered a matching brig-style spaulders. I need to do more research on different shoulder...
