Re: The future of C&T
The difference that's playing out here is that some of our members want to retain the more narrowly focused "good ole' days" of the SCA, and some of us want to allow changes from the norm that would broaden the possibilities within the society. Johnathan, the members of the society have t...

Re: Shield backing
Thanks for the replies. I was leaning toward the cloth backing option, and it sounds even more like the answer for me. Does the Dap cement need to be diluted at all? It does dry clear, correct? In order to prevent air pockets when applying the cloth, is it better to place the glue all over the shiel...

Re: The future of C&T
Based on what I've been reading in several threads, I think that Johnathan would rather have purely rattan combat in the SCA than a multi-discipline fighting contingent if given the choice. That opinion tends to flavor his perspective on issues like this one. Johnathan, I really really think that it...

I'm currently re-doing my big ole' war shield. It's an aluminum Windrose peaked top heater. I first put it together when I was a younger fighter, before I was seduced by the awesomeness here on the archive. So, while it has served me extremely well (money well spent at Windrose, folks) it has some a...

Re: The future of C&T
I for one would love to see C&T replace rattan fighting . No matter how we shape a stick, it's still a stick. It's time the SCA moved forward and evolved instead of stagnating and waiting to die. Among all the folks actually DOING C&T, I've never encountered this opinion. I hear it only fro...

Most spectators are going to size up the organization and decide if they're interested within the first five minutes of observation. That is why it is so important that public displays are held to the highest possible standard ...

Re: The future of C&T
There should be no dishonor in trusting people to count shots. It shows faith in your fellow man, and allows for an impartial judge. It's a lot like bringing matched weapons in a way IMO. It shows good sportsmanship and faith. -Aaron The faith should be safe when placed in your honorable opponent, ...

Re: The future of C&T
Aaron, As all of our combat games are honor-based, I doubt we'll ever endorse active marshalling. Really, the drastically smaller surface area and increased rigidity of a rebated steel blade will make for a blow that will transfer more force, and may really help cut down on ambiguous shots. Now, if ...

Re: The future of C&T
Aaron,
I don't think a three judge panel would be at all necessary to judge blows, any more than they are now. I imagine it would feel similar to a "good blow" as delivered with rattan.
To help negate this skipping issue, you could cover your breastplate in velvet, like a Burgundean.

Re: The future of C&T
If it were to replace heavy fighting, meaning at the same force level as heavy fighting now, I think it would become incredibly expensive. As it stands now we dent 14 and 12 gauge helms imagine what steal weapons are going to do to armour. Instead of having a helm that has lasted over 20 years, you...

Re: Combat boots or bust.
For a combat boot that'll break in easy, I'd look at a jungle boot with a steel toe. Corcoran is a damn good boot that's pretty low-profile. I've had good luck with a cheap pair of 5/11 jungle boots, though they weren't steel toe- but they may have some that are. They were durable and very comfortab...

The future of C&T
So, branching off from the "The Future of the SCA" thread, in which C&T has featured prominantly, I'd like everyone to take a look at the future of this fighting style, where it could go, and what it could mean for the SCA. Some feel that it could grow in popularity and evolve into a f...

Nicely done. I really like the finish on that, it seems to suit the helm rather well for some reason. Is it heat blackened or oil quenched?

But all innovations and explorations thus far have been under the armoured combat marshalate since it all boils down to the single office held by a stickjock. I thi...
