Check him out in "Lion in Winter", one of the few remakes that is arguably better than the original.

Wanted: Roman Army (pic heavy)

In my quest to see the SCA as well armed as they are armored, I have a design for a very sweet solid rattan roman gladius in my head. However, making it right would take equipment that I don't have, and not be worth it for only one or two (or a half dozen) swords. To patron this project, I need a ro...

The marshal isn't thrilled with this view either. Aventails are the norm around here.

Maybe if you took a pic with helm and gorget on we might be able to better tell you what could maybe be modified. Could be an adjustment to your gorget would be the better route to go. The helmet in the foreground - is that the good one or the other one?... Yes. Here's another pic. The one on the right fits me. The one on the left is wider side to side than it is front to back, and if the wearer puts the widest part of the helm at the widest part of his head, his eyes will be abo...

Ruining a good helm

I own two helms. One is an oversized round thing that I got on ebay because the price was too good to ignore but so oddly shaped that I can't give away. The other was custom fitted to my head by a Laurel armorer over 20 years ago. The problem is that I no longer have the build I did 20 years ago and...

Re: Your sword.

If you had to fight with a steel sword, whether rebated or sharp, what would you choose and why? If I had to really fight with a steel weapon, a sword would be pretty far down my list. This has more to do with my skill set than the quality of swords as weapons. In a real battle, my preference would...

The standard I was taught was: thrust as if the grill wasn't there. If you touch the grill, but wouldn't hit the face under, it is too light. If you pool cue him off his feet, it is too hard. My resolutions: 1) Show up ready to fight. That's it, and I've already broken it one practice after I got my...

Review of Combat of the Thirty Calendar

m The mail delivered it to the wrong address, but thanks to a kindly neighbor, I got my calendar today. Everything about it was a pleasant surprise. First off, it is large: bigger than any of my old calendars. The paper is actually quality cardstock and printed on just one side. The price was stiff,...

One little training trick you can try, if you can get a third person to say "lay on" for you, is to start a duel uncomfortably close to your opponent. I was taught great sword that way: two men with swords over five feet long starting duels not quite corps-a-corps, but still standing close...

DO move. DON'T run away. Imagine in your mind that your opponent closes with you and throws a wrap to your head. Imagine where he wants you to stand and where your weapon won't impede his blow. Don't be in that position. Now imagine a butt wrap. Same process. Finally, imagine a blow that flows paral...

I'm glad you like the sword. I'd love to see a picture with a person in it so people can get a sense of scale. I'm fairly certain it would have balanced better if the pommel you had sent had been solid instead of hollow. If you can safely melt lead, you might be able to improve the balance (by parti...
