Re: Will the BoTN change the SCA:s HF game?
I hope not. I'd rather swordfight than play, "who can trip who first". First you need a sword to swordfight. Standing belly to belly ass wraping each other with bamboo isn't sword fighting. Still the SCA stuff looks fun. I tried it once at a practice. Was cool. You seriously have the wrong impressi...

Re: Will the BoTN change the SCA:s HF game?
was that really necessary? In any case, the point was pretty much on target. Thanks. And well...I do tend to use the point more than the edge, even in SCA Heavy. Hopefully it's at least occasionally on target. I also stand by my point (geddit?): SCA Heavy is a wonderful thing (still do it...

Re: Helm or Helmet?
Oh yes I agree. We play hard as well (The original A-kingdom) and as I said it is not always the case but I have seen it a good number of times over the years. It's normally a very short discussion much like someone saying light or low. Not the norm but not completely uncommon. We play a rough game ...

Re: A question about impeding blows.
Any western fighter who has participated in an Estrella war could tell you, turning your head to the side to pretend that a spear to the ear is not good blow is a very good way to find yourself taking an unexpected nap during the battle and waking to the sound of people yelling "HOLD!"

Re: Helm or Helmet?
Logan, in my experience there normally is some differentiation between blows to the top of the head and elsewhere. Many times if a blow is high on the helm a fighter will tell his opponent not to take it because it was high on the helm and not a good blow. This is not always the case but I have seen...

I fought in that. I remember we were all hunting Gaston (Chris Gilman) because he had a microphone in his helm and the cameras were tracking him. We were however grateful that he had helped to bring such exposure to our game. Good times.
One of the few times I fought alongside my father.

Re: Helm or Helmet?
Thank you for the info Gerhard. It seems that it is modern scholars trying to make the distinction between the word helm and helmet as them having some seperate meaning and only in some cases. The origin of the word seems to favor the idea that helm was simply a general term used to describe any sor...

Re: Helm or Helmet?
I can agree with that Gavin but I have seen no real evidence of the term helm meaning something larger or more protective than a helmet. I do also wonder how some would come to the conclusion that the standard would mean something other than the normal conical with a nasal when the entire standard i...

Helm or Helmet?
It bothers me quite a bit that some people seem to think that this.... 1. All “fully armored” fighters are presumed to be wearing a chain hauberk over a padded gambeson, with boiled leather arm and leg defenses and an open-faced iron helm with a nasal . The helm may be presumed by Kingdom convention...

Re: A question about impeding blows.
I think that must have been a local thing Gavin. I've never seen a rule from society level that prevented thrusting to the head other than the face. Sigifrith, if a guy wants to cheat by turning his head so that he can blow off shots obviously he is asking to be stabbed in the junk. This is not to s...

Re: A question about impeding blows.
As far as the crowd/gallery/people watching us - they have an impact on our renown. You might not like it or accept it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. If you don't want non-fighters to have an opinion about your fighting, or how you act on the field - stay home and fight in your backyard. ...

Re: A question about impeding blows.
To clarify, in my personal opinion the technique may function but will look lame. I have no problem with anyone choosing what they wish to do and if a guy wants to deal with potential hassle down the road for a bad rep that he didn't even know he had that's all on him. I am not calling any individua...

Re: A question about impeding blows.
Essentially you are talking about blocking with your limbs. Wether it works or not it's lame and WILL look bad. You can decide that you don't care what the crowd thinks when you are on the field but I can tell you the field is a far nicer place to be when the people watching respect you for the way ...

Re: A question about impeding blows.
While I don't disagree about the potential for using said technique effectively and reducing a blows power to below acceptable level, like it or not reputation is key to enjoying yourself in this game. It may be light but it may look aweful so why do that to yourself? Why potentially have people thi...

Re: A question about impeding blows.
Very grey area indeed. I can sum it up by saying that it's not very cool to do it so I would recommend against it. If nobody notices that you tried to do it intentionally then so be it and if it is light for certain then it's light. If somebody notices that you are trying to put the limb in the way ...

Actually it isn't illegal oddly enough. I thought the same thing but then found this... D. A shield or weapon may be used to displace, deflect, or immobilize an opponent’s shield or weapon, so long as such use does not endanger the safety of the combatants. A shield or haft may be safely placed agai...

The Spit IMO. More blade, dual edge, straight handle, better for thrusting and it looks like it might have decent balance. Probably not quite as much chopping power as the reaper but overall a more comfortable and versatile looking weapon.

I Will again support Kilkenny in his original statement that it's inherent problem is simply that people are involved. The more people you have the more complex it becomes. Too many people want to point at this aspect or that aspect and say well that's what we are SUPPOSED to be doing etc rather tha...

Re: Hitting the same spot mutliple times
One of the elements of my training was practicing returning the sword to it's original position after the blow was delivered just as fast as the shot was thrown. This training builds the return or pulling muscles that many training techniques ignore but it is very important to build those muscles an...

NO In this case the MARSHAL is insufficient. The rule does not discuss the "what ifs" of throwing your sword whole sale. As long as the guard does not significantly extend past the GAUNTLETED hand DURING USE then it should pass. All one handed swords must have a lanyard, strap, or trigger to be leg...

for thin but effective padding I used spray adhesive to line my gauntlets with yoga mat. It's thin but more dense than just the blue closed cell and is very comfy. Yoga mat is about 1/8" thick. Can buy a yoga mat at wall mart.
