This post seems to be veering away from my origional questions. Let me clarify. Has anybody here read "Leather and the Warrior", and if so does it cover leather breastplates or body armour in early medieval times? Is the book worth the price? If anybody knows of a link to excerpts from, or...

... which is exactly why I am wondering about the book in question. I think it would be fairly difficult for a leather breastplate to survive more than a few hundred years. I think it would be used and abused, the property of a fairly poor man who could not afford iron or bronze. Then once it wore o...

On the topic about wax and brewers pitch, is there any issue using brewers pitch on a bottle that has been waxed already? I was wondering if the wax would repel brewers pitch and not stick together. Or do they melt together?

Do you have a bench grinder? If so you can use a buffing wheel (buy at lowes, Home depot, anywhere tools sold) and some polishing compound (right next to the buffing wheels). I attach a 6" fine grit sand paper disc to the outside of the buffing wheel and sand it 1st, then remove the SP disc and...

I own the HF english wheel, and use it quite a bit. It has a very hard time with shaping anything heavier than 20 gauge, but I use it for planishing. It can planish 14 gauge steel helmet halves after initial dishing with a hammer, and smooths out all the rough spots very well. The threaded shaft str...

Does anybody here make thier own axe heads? (SCA)

I was just wondering if there is an SCA legal method to make a decent axe head from leather or other materials. Or do you have to use the vulcanized rubber heads?

Also, does anybody know of a source for thick rubber sheets?
