After painting my shield, my Lady has requested a series of smaller, linen wrapped shields for painting coats of arms as decorative items. After some are done I'll post them up here, they aren't technically shields per se, but they are shield.... ish...

Re: Brass accents on a greathelm

I had thought about maybe just the brass along the eye slot and then down the nose without the extra part sticking above the eye slot. Sort of a Mjolnir type design. It would either look really neat, or look eye-rollingly SCAdian, I'm not sure which.

Re: Rune Leather stamps

Did you have a particular set of runes in mind?

The ones linked above seem to be either gothic or anglo-saxon. I am no expert and could be mistaken.

I wonder, do the folks at Steffans produce any other alphabets? I would love a set with the latinized runic alphabet.

Brass accents on a greathelm

Nearly every greathelm I've seen with brass accents has them in the shape of a cross up the face and across the eyes. This shape makes sense, given the shape of the helm and religious affiliation of most everyone who used such a helm in period. I am considering adding a greathelm to my kit, but I am...

If anyone asks just say you aren't a knight. At worst you might cause some knight to "harrumph", but folks like that need to learn to take themselves less seriously anyway. They're your arms, wear them with pride on any item of clothing you see fit. That's just my opinion though, do what y...

Ok, a look into my list to myself on what to do: Don't think in range. Use sword more at proper angles for blocking. Don't be mentally beaten before a fight even starts. Don't be intimidated. Don't fight not to lose. Fight to win. Use more feints. My fight is inside. Don't be too content to stay mi...

Some people choose to be offended by certain things.

Some people are easily offended by many things.

None of these things are wrong, they simply are.

You must have never seen the one fingered salute rendered. I have, and I consider it no salute, but a gesture of contempt. Whenever I refer to it, I put the phrase in quotes. Precisely my point. Certain actions are not salutes at all, and so when you use them in place of a salute people may take of...

A very nice looking hammer. I'm also a fan of the pronged lucerne design. Of all the weapons in the medieval arsenal, I feel like this would be one of the least pleasant to be hit with. Not that it would be particularly awesome to get hit with a sword, spear, mace, or anything else really... the pro...

I've never seen a "rude" salute. Isn't "rude salute" an oxymoron, really? A salute is by its very nature a gesture of respect. The rudeness, I would submit, is in the eye of the beholder. You must have never seen the one fingered salute rendered. I think this links back to the o...

I have never seen an example of a peaked heater in medieval art. The round top of the kite shield was cut off. The kite shaped survived in a scaled-down version in Italy. I have no problem admitting that I got the elbows mainly because I liked the look of them and I got a great deal for stainless. If there is another type of elbow protection that would look less jarring on arm defenses like these, I am very open to suggestion. 8)

It looks good enough to hit, to me. Very nicely done. I would have gone with a smaller elbow cop without the "soupcan" creases, but there are still plenty of sources I have not seen and your choice may be well-supported. Did you have a particular example in mind for these elbows? Also, wi...

AFAIK the center crease flared edge design applies to both elbows and knees. Identical designs are available for elbow/knee from many armorers, including Mercenary's Tailor and Mandrake. These elbows are originally from Mandrake, and while they do technically fit over my knees, it is a tight fit at ...
