Re: Show us your shields.

My lady just got done painting my newly redone shield earlier tonight. http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh269/Tvayumat/th_001.jpg I like this shape of shield. During what time frame would it be appropriate? 14th-15th century roughly, same as any heater. It is 36" tall and I have heard the ar...

Re: Brass rivets

4. Most people use pretty big rivets in articulations anyway, so brass is fine. A 3/6" inch solid rivet in iron or brass will work for almost anything. A 1/2 inch rivet is perhaps a bit big for what we are doing. Agreed. I use 3/16" diameter solid brass rivets and they are remarkably solid.

Doesn't the saddle soap prevent the dyes from taking? I've used saddle soap as a cleaner to treated/chrome tanned leathers. But it always seemed like it would be counter productive on vegetable tanned that I had yet to dye. -C I have not had any issues with it. Admittedly my first application is mu...

Re: Brass rivets

I would avoid using brass rivets in helm construction, unless you use extra rivets to make up the extra strength. Other than that, the only place I can imagine brass rivets having an issue is if you are using them as load-bearing hinges articulating heavy plate or something.

Godric, I think the issue is that, from a purely SCA rules-based point of view, it could be argued that the thumb does not provide adequate coverage. Gauntlets are required to cover all external surfaces of the hand with a rigid material. I extend this to mean that all external surfaces must be prot...

Strap strength concerns...

Putting straps on some splinted limb armor and I have some concerns about strength.

If I use a 5 oz leather cut into 1/2" straps, and then attach the straps using 1/4" chicago screws through the center, will the straps be too weak for armor?

FS: 3-panel Milanese mitten gauntlets SOLD

Got these from re-enactment supplies, only to end up not needing them due to fortuitous circumstances (Ended up with three pairs of gauntlets somehow). They are 17G MS with a satin finish, painted insides, already fully strapped. Palm width is 4'5", overall thumb length of 4" or so. They w...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)

I have told people often that all the problems I ever had in the SCA came down to the fact I thought the SCA was a game and most people in the SCA don't. Yeah, that hits the nail on the head fairly well. Some people view it as a casual fun game, some people view it as a game they want to "win&...

One of the reasons I picked the period in the end Konstantin, there is a lot of room for interpretation and mix'n'match without being un-period. Allows me to upgrade from splint to plate as I get the money without changing periods.
