Wulfric, I managed to get it picked up by a friend of a friend of a friend, so it should find its way to Estrella. Thank you very much for your offer. I was worrying for a bit there. Ah, but this event predates *all* other kingdoms. The first event in the East wouldn't be for nearly a year (and even then, apparently it was rained out). This is true but the history of the SCA is more than the history of the West. Sigh. That's why I said, "The early history of the West...&qu...

While combat archery was indisputably practice wealy on in the West it was not so in other Kingdoms. It was introduced in the East in 1995 or a little later. Maeryk CA is a relative late comer to the SCA combat field. IE we started without it and didn't have it for quite a while in the 40 years of the SCA. Murdock, not that it is particularly relevant to the ongoing discussions, but according to m you are mistaken. This link discusses what appears to be...

" This has nothing to do with archery so i'll yeild yall back to the quarrel in progress. Ouch. Nice pun, Murdock! In general, I haven't really had a problem with archers on the field. Maybe that's because in the West, we usually run our scenarios with plate as proof against arrows. This cause...

Klaus,

OK. I'm up to 8 now. I'll know the total once I place the order. You can get the the cash anytime. Or, maybe you can pay me with brig nails. :)

I'm hoping the books will be in before White Shield.

CAID: Can anyone take a B3 from Irvine to Estrella?

I bought a B3 shear off ebay and it needs to be picked up in Irvine this week. I was hoping someone in CAID would do me a huge favor and pick it up for me and bring it to Estrella. She-who-must-be-obeyed decided that we are flying this year, so that put a crimp in my plan to stop in LA for rattan as...

Can anyone in Irvine, CA pick up my B3 for me?

I just bought a B3 off of ebay, but it needs to be picked up in Irvine, CA. I had thought about swinging by on the way to Estrella, but I had miscalculated the timing. It has to be picked up within 10 days and Estrella is farther away. Anyway, is there anyone in the area that can pick it up for me a...

Brookswift, I haven't finalized my Estrella plans yet. I'm going, but I have not decided yet if I am flying or driving or finding a ride. At this late stage, there's probably about a 30% chance of my flying, 60% chance of me driving and 10% chance I will try to bum a ride. I should have a better ide...

I was at a tourney last fall where, after the main tourney, they had a quick tourney using break away shields. IIRC, they were made of 3/8" particle board. They each had a centerboss with a grip. It was fought with special rules. The two combatants stood nearly toe to toe, and could only move one fo...

InsaneIrish, Brookswift: In the West, we don't use white diamonds. We use orange pheons to denote non-contact archers. Brookswift: What you were told was correct for combat in the West. I just use small lengths of pallet banding. Bend them into a U, punch holes in the ends, put them on the shield and drill through the holes and through the shield, and then rivet them on.

The "Plate is Proof" rule, as applied to melee combat in the West Kingdom, defined plate as 16 square inches of solid or overlapping metal. So metal lamellar and scale counted, but not plastic or leather. If you had a coat of plates (non-overlapping) that were at least 4" by 4", and the arrow landed...

You are probably thinking about Sir Taloric. He was not actually knighted on the field, but instead offered the accolade that day during the battle. He held his vigil that night and was admitted to the Order of Chivalry the next evening at Western Court.

I, too, have suggested that we do away with the thrusting tips on single handes swords. My suggestion as the alternative to the low-profile thrusting tips currently in use was to put a piece of nylon webbing across the tip to keep any splinters in the tip from scraping bare skin. I use webbing to ho...
