Aaron, bad thing was I was being a bit more than half serious. There are too many people on the AA that already approve of the way the SCA does combat so really it wouldn't change. Look at all the other threads on changing one thing and people have varying opinions. The one thing we all know and fol...

Gees guys, I was just posting some neat toys I bought and musing. My what an odd place the archive is. Truly. Can I ask a dumb question? If you might think of switching over to these HPDE swords as a better or more durable simulator, why wouldn't you just go all the way to steel? I think I'm missin...

Now what was the original reason for the post again Brian you did this to see how many times people could derail it, admit it I thought the horizontal strike was common in Flore and in I33? Maybe I am wrong but could have sworn I have seen it in both. Now a stick of rattan does not act like a steel ...

Brian, I actually understood where you were going with this and it had nothing to do with SCA heavy combat. However to answer your question. SCA fencers/rapier fighters and heavy fighters do two totally different styles. Just try to go out on a rapier field and throw a flat snap and see the reaction...

It's simple ergonomics. Put a basket hilted sword and a stand sword in a scabbard, hang them own your side and draw them out. Now think about having to do that in armor under combat conditions and see which you would rather pull when seconds can decided the difference between life and death. Vebrand

Hey, Vebrand, I must have known you then. (I was in Nant-y-Derwyddon 1980-1988.) Haven't seen Hagen (Frank) in years and years. Friar Glendavar's son is in Owl's Nest now. Big strapping lad; uses his dad's B-52 shield. Man I remember that shield it had no give what so ever. I talked to Frank a few ...

Asbrand, I have no problem talking and look me up at an event. If I have a few beers we can sit and talk about it. if not then you bring the beers I think the difference comes from how you saw his Grace and how his Grace saw you in that meeting. Nothing enflaming here just you rarely see ones self a...

Going to bump this one up and say I am moving on June 5th. Been trying to work out my schedule to show up at fighter practice one last time as I have a big ole bag of closed cell foam I wanted to give to whoever could use it. We will see when I can get there. Just need free time and I have none Vebr...

Bryce, Atlanta was not the problem child and nether was Meridies. However there were problem children on both sides. I started my SCA career with at ETSU in Meridies. Was Squired to Sir Aerik within Duke Olaf's household in Atlantia. Aerik quit and was my own person for sometime. Squired to Sir Kaus...

This has been a really good thread without turning it into a bash Meridies thread. However it is starting to take that turn. For all fairness I marshalled several Gulf Wars and saw some really ugly stuff. I sat in a meeting where all hell was raised about one Kingdom from almost all the other kingdo...

Camric is one fighter I would not lay odds against. If I was a guessing man I would say Camric and Havordh are the two favorites to make the finals. Now saying that there are probably about 4 or 5 that can take this list. Guys I really like. Aengus is an old friend and we have known each other for a...

Heat plays part of the issues in Meridies and humidity plays part of the issue. Another part is the economy. Some of the poorest staest are in the south and going for cheaper armor some times is the easy choice. I have seen guys in Meridies wear upper body armor of a kidney belt, blue paint, leather...

Meridies does not have the corner on Hot but on minimal armor across a Kingdom they might. Having lived in more Kingdoms than most and played in others I can't say any other Kingdom wears less armor on the whole. It is a southern culture courtesy ideal in Meridies probably more than anything that is...

The Kite shield was in use in the Byzantine Empire earlier than 1066. There was influence from eastern cultures. One could argue that there is the posibility that Rus Vikings saw the Kite shield and had a chance to use it. However I am unaware of any archeological evidence of Vikings using them. Veb...

Michael of Bedford used to make some heart sheped ones decades ago that were always very nice. I fight in a solid SS that Sir Kaus from Little Rock made several years ago that looks really nice.
