Re: Non-Laurels Only! Please post your work!

My only advice would be to use a chisel instead of a whole punch for the thongs next time. You rarely see round holes in medievial leather work outside shoe decorations, most items like this you see tiny slits. THANK YOU! Great advice to improve my work. I never noticed the slits, I'll have to look...

1899607_790201087690613_1773299746852609272_o.jpg A friend asked me to make a sheath for his knife for Pennsic. It's a 20th Century dagger, and he asked for a modern belt loop rather than a more tradition suspension method. So here's what I made. It's got a poplar core and is covered in 2-3 oz. dye...

That's my choice, too. They're not "period" but at least there is some foot and ankle support.

I have 2 pairs of Bohemond boots, one with and one without a Vibram sole, and while they are fine as period footwear, they SUCK for fighting, as do all other period shoes/boots.

I betcha wax hardening would do the trick? Maybe it gets soft just because the protein molecules break down over time.

Rivets are for the look without the weight of splints. I don't get hit very often so I don't need the extra weight of actual splints. (:

Re: Re-hardening cuir bouilli leather?

They're cuisses that I bought from someone in my kingdom (home-made). They're just getting kinda soft and they're losing their shape. You can see that the one on the left is flattening out a bit. I am wondering if I can repeat the cuir bouilli to harden them again. Or will that ruin the leather? I m...

Re-hardening cuir bouilli leather?

I have some cuir bouilli armor (dyed black with riveted straps and buckles) that is getting somewhat floppy and soft. Looks like it was originally 10 or 12 oz. leather. Has anyone ever tried to repeat the process of cuir bouilli to regain the hardness? My preferred cuir bouilli process is to soak th...

Re: What does this strap do?

Check out the mail coif threads at My Armoury, there is a lot of discussion on this matter over there. It seems to function as a headband to hold the mail coif in place, or perhaps is related to the manner in which the mail is pulled tight up around the chin. No one knows for sure, but there sure is...

Re: Can someone help find out if this is documentable

The salt shaker helm in the OP is an intermediary between the conical nasals of the 12th Century and the Mac Bible great helms of the early-13th Century. The salt shaker helms were used right around AD 1200. Looks like the conical nasal developed into a flat-topped nasal, and then a faceplate was ad...

Re: Plans for a coat of plates of sorts

Chest pieces also need overlap... FYI, I fight in a CoP without overlapping plates, and it works just fine. I guess for historical authenticity the plates should overlap, but for simplicity it's not necessary. I wear a Zoombang shirt, and my CoP is 5-6 oz leather with aluminum plates. I don't even ...

Re: Steel Flint Strikers, Strike-a-Lights & Fire Steels

Konstantin is correct, case hardened steel is not a desireable material for a striker. In fact, some people make strikers from old, worn-out files because they are usually made from high-carbon steel. However, you have to be careful that you don't use a cheaper case-hardened file instead, for the re...

I have ordered from Jolly Knight before. Things take quite bit longer than he says, and sometimes communication is delayed, but I don't worry about it. He always comes through, eventually. I wouldn't plan on getting what you want by a certain deadline, but otherwise it seems to be worth the wait.
