I think he really meant "With baited shield." When fighting squires, I often hang a scrap of white belt leather on the top edge of my shield. They tend to fixiate on that and become easy prey. From the Armor Archive,Jean Paul and I are on the committee. There is a pretty good WMA representation. There was an initial flurry of activity, but it has died off for the last week or so. I still have a sneaking suspicion in the back of my mind that this is just a way to get the rabble rousers off...

Morgan, There is one instance where I call face shots "tippy." Our armor conventions assume that the bars in front of my face are not there. I call any shot that would have hit me in the face (even very lightly)as a mortal wound. However, a shot at extreme range which skims the bars, but Would Not H...

I use rattan right at 1-1/4" with husk so I don't shape the blade, but I have small hands so I carve the handle. I do the rough shaping with a rotary rasp attached to a hand held drill motor. I use a hand rasp for the final shaping and then cover the raw wood with two layers of baseball bat tape. Je...

I have been using an aluminum shield for the last 11 years. I have no plans to change. The main reason is durability. When I fought a lot, I would go through wooden shields too often. The T-6 aluminum lasts a lot longer. Drawbacks Yes it can get wobbly, but I have never had noticable vibration probl...

I have had good success with a 2'x3' rectangle, which is a normal size for Ansteorra. The corners add a lot to the defense. Also, you want to move your shield handle 2-3 inches further towards the back of the shield than a right hander would use. This puts more of the shield in front of you to cover...

To thick and too soft. I use either 6061 T-6 or 7075 T-6, that is 1/16" thick. I can get a 12' x 4' sheet cut into eight 2' x 3' blanks for about $40 per blank. They last 3 or 4 years of fairly constant fighting. The blanks weigh 5.5 lbs. The shield basket and edging bring it to about 6-7 lbs. Regar...

I used to use 3/8" cabinet quality birch. It was fairly strong and very light. You would have to go to a cabinet maker or cabinet maker's supply, to find it. It is a bit expensive unless you are fairly serious about your fighting and about using wood. I have used aircraft aluminum for the last sever...

Hello, I'm Jean Richard and I have been a Tuchux enabler. My first reign (about ten years ago) was also my first Pennsic. As an allied Kingdom, I had been "encouraged" to recruit the Tuchux, as the East and West had agreed not to higher mercernaries. I had no idea of who or what the Tuchux were. It ...
