Let me in turn clarify what I am talking about. When I am making an aventail or bishop's mantle, I use a spreader at the front and back of each shoulder. Each spreader is separated by a narrow rectangle on each shoulder and by wider rectangles front and back. A "spreader" is constructed from two rig...

Skillet, The key thing is that they are supposed to cover the inside point of the knee. If you can manage to get over to Tyler, TX (100 miles west)for practice this Sunday, I'll be glad to see what we could do to make them legal. At the worst, you should be able to add a small "wing" (flap) of heavy...

In the practice I train with, we all call "good" loudly and don't fall down. This is because of the many, many points we fight and to save time. We also don't usually act out leg or arm shots, just call it and go on. (Unless we are training on fighting from the ground.) Same thing in genreal sparing...

Sarnac, The quick answer is yes, a 12 foot rattan pike is unwieldy. I haven't used a 12 foot pike since before I was a squire, about 14-15 years ago. At the time I was mostly a melee polearm/spear fighter without much sword and shield skill. I'm afraid that it is the other way around now. The 12 foo...

If you want a lighter wooden shield and are willing to spend a little extra money, try using cabinet quality birch. I used 3/8" cabinet quality birch. It cost more and lasts a little less time than standard plywood, but it much lighter. You will probably need to go to a cabinet shop or a cabinetry s...

4 I'm somewhat ambivalent about CA, but I agree that it is unrealisticly effective as it is now in SCA combat. It, just like a gun, is an equalizer and tends to nullify the highly skilled heavy weapons fighter. As a primary target, I am not heartbroken if it is not allowed in a scenario. However, if...
