I can recommend "Arms and Armor in Colonial America",
The book has a lot on Spanish equiptment.
Oh and a lot of the conquistadores were gentlement, but second, third, or fourth sons - they might not have been really wearing state of the art gear.

I have a panther double bell wedge, it doesn't use a ridgepole. I have external ropes coming off the two posts at 45% angles, that I keep very taught.

go to a good gun shop, and pick up "breakfree", coat the rusted surface, and come back the next day. It will generally lift a good amount of surface rust all by itself.
It's also the best penetrating oil I have run across in about thirty years.

The problem you're going to run into is that the mail needs to be built to fit the plates, not the other way around. Butted mail is absolutely worthless on that project.

I've had better luck figuring that surcoats aren't going to have a long working life, they drape a whole lot better with a single layer of reasonable weight fabric.
