Re: Health and Fitness in SCA Combat
I got kind of a setback when I was recently told I would never be as strong as any of the guys and I needed to keep that in mind as I moved forward with my fighting. It won't lie. It made me take pause as to whether I wanted to continue. But I figured if I can't be strong then I'll have to figure o...

Re: Worst Pennsic XL Moments!
Fleig and I have never really hit it off, that being said I refuse to beleive that he would attempt to hurt an archer with a cheap shot body check. Other hand I wish those whiney little bitches (of either sex) would figure out that they either should or should not participate in a full contact marti...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)
Thank you, Mateo. That was inspiring, especially from a fellow rapier fighter. I've been in the SCA for just 4 years. I've had a lot of fun, but the real "Dream" moments have been few. An elegant Italian feast in a well-decorated hall. Another, much simpler feast of soup and bread on a co...

Re: fighting with missing fingers
It has always seemed odd to me that historical accounts of battles and duels often go into great detail about the wounds received, but (to my limited knowledge) losing fingers and fingertips is very seldom mentioned. I have to wonder if this is because it was actually a rare injury (seems unlikely)...

Re: The Iron Chicken stance has got to go (SCA).
OK.. I got to say this: The Iron Chicken stance has got to go. It's mildly dishonorable, and not really historic. If were all armoured like in 1066 then there are no basket hilts and no gauntlets, and while chopping at someones hand may not be telling, it certainly is possible if he puts his statio...

Vis is a polearm specialist and discovered that it was extremely advantageous to him to be able to both block and strike simultaneously. That would be to hit the other fellow while your weapons are in contact. At that moment he knows with certainty where your weapon is and that you can neither stri...

Set your way back machine to somewhere between 1975 and 1965. During that time frame you can use a real axe handle for your axe in the SCA. In my first tournament in the SCA I borrowed a mace that was a lightweight BASEBALL BAT with a foam head on it. That was in AS XI (1974). Probably from El of t...

Re: LFMF (Learn From My Fail)
I was at my Shire meeting on Wednesday night and I asked some of the more experienced fighters about using a short 36" ax, two handed. They lined me out with all of the cons about auth issues and technique short comings(ie getting my head caved in for using a baseball swing). Anyway, I had a l...

Actually Jonathan the most dangerous thing we currently do in the SCA is to have morbidly obese people fall on us. Second to that is to have people roll on to the sides of our legs at the knee in mellees . I would guess that third is dehydration, leading to kidney stones, but that is on my mind sin...
