Modern is not better
This past Friday as I was sitting in Baronial court at Pennsic, I realized a few things. One it was damn hot. Two I was not feeling bad, in fact I realized I was hardly winded after fighting rapier for about 2 hours, plus walking around carrying my fight bag, plus the heat, plus the having been walk...

Some of the descriptions I have come across merely stated blows or occasionally "hits" but that may depend on translations. I was always under the thought that it was landed hits, as opposed to a pass which was described in some texts as single engagement. I can't think of which texts off hand so I ...

Non Europeon swordwork?
Does anyone practice or try to learn about swordwork of non europeon cultures?
Other than Kendo, I was wondering if there were any sources on say Moorish scimitar work, etc.
Anyone?

From the Darach Shire (where ever they are) From their FAQ page ( http://www.crescentwing.com/darachshire/faqfighting.html ) A rather nice description. "In the above description of heavy weapons, I mentioned it is a "full-contact" art. They really are hitting each other, and with considerable force....

"I guess my 12th century pagan Scott with a great-kilt and Viking armor stolen from dead invaders is wrong? Guess I'll have to stick to a 16th century Catholic German. " No of course not. There is no such thing as Catholics, we all know that ....

Sounds like another "I am going to mold history to fit me instead of doing actual research that might prove me wrong." After all in the movie 13th Warrior the Vikings wearing armour that they aquired from their raids, like 15th century spanish helms and other armour bits and movies really show how t...

Just a couple of notes. Knights have not really died out, at least not in England. I believe that the Order of the Garter is still alive and well. I think what started to die out in the Renaissance was the formal page-squire-knight training and requirements, that were prevelant in the Middle Ages. M...

“For some reason, the rapier community seems to attract people who are more bookish and interested in documentation. Most mediaeval knights cared about winning- winning honors, winning wealth and winning "...the admiration of noble women". Ok a little confused. First off, is an interest in documen...

A little side comment from the halfswording thread, mentioned what is excessive force? Got me to thinking. What does one feel excessive force is? Simple opinion not SCA law. ------------------ "As long as there are fanatics there will always be heretics [This message has been edited by Winterfell (e...

Let me take a look at a few things and get back to you on that. I remember seeing some stuff on arming points used in the late 16th century full armour I just need to go look at the references, and see how much it would spill over to the 17th. However if you are talking about the simple breast and b...

SCA generally has an issue not just with the issue of grasping a "sharp" blade although there are rules about that, the statements I hear most is the possibility of hitting someone TOO hard in the face with it. Personally I do not see a problem, myself, but then again I know I can controll it enough...

That would be a pretty cool idea. What I would suggest would be: 1. Shield arm must be full armoured. 2. Clamshell or equivalant hand protection for both hands. 3. The inside of the shield should be ducttaped. The reason is that inorder to avoid splinters from going everywhere. I would suggest black...

live steel tournaments?

Specifically: Arms and armour requirments, authorization, safety, and judging. I am also interested in where they are held and when (with my luck probably almost always...

How deep do you go for your persona?
Your at the SCA, Red Company, ArgentWolfe, what have you, history group. How deep do you go in your persona? Do affect a accent? Do you keep in mind what your persona would do and act the entire time. How much research do you put in for your particular persona, including clothes and historical resea...

What should be addressed concerning safety and fighters in the SCA and what the SCA thinks. TRAINING: Or the lack there of. I do not have a problem with bar grills on helms since SCA combat is a tournament, not actual war. Although I would prefer to see, and would love to have, a visored helm. Why doesn't the SCA have helms that LOOK like period tournament helms? That would be even better. As for basket hilt swords, I ca...

Leeds Armoury or what I want my home to be
Hey all, I went there last year and had a blast. I only got a chance to stay for one day so next time will have to plan for at least a week. Ok now that I got all the Horse folks together here it seems. Does any jousting group use this "alley" jousting range that Mr. Cross talks about? I have seen jousting companies use only the single tilt barrier, not the three fences thing that he mentioned. I hope I am making sense. Where he is talki...

The gentleman that Moon mentions sounds like he has a great thing going. The only problem is that (and forgive my opinion here)if you can't get the generic fighter to cover his plastic how are you going to get them to spiff up their swords? I have seen some truly chewed up swords go out on the field...

That is from another thread. He meant Geere. Richard Geere was paid to be in First Knight so if he is gonna fight he is gonna take that helmet off so people can see his face. Somewhat of a side note. Rhys, Were you a king in the SCA? You are listed as Count Rhys of Harlech, I think Count is a rank for one who has been king right? If you were, did you try to impose more adherence to authenticity to your Court? Was it sucesseful if you did? After all shouldn't the kingdom ...
