My impression is that they are widely represented in art form the period. The Golden Rossl of Charles VI for example has a fully developed frog mouth helm and is dated to 1404

We'll be there Sunday this year. I'd love to see either of your early 16th century gauntlet sets- especially A-104. A-53 and A-58 would be cool too. oo! and A-63 with the associated cannons :)

The example in Madrid had a bevor matched to it. I think if you built it to the proportions of the original it would leave too much of the jaw and throat exposed for most folks to be comfortable with for SCA use.

You can get suitable hinges from Mcmaster-Carr:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#piano-hinges/=b4o35p

I've mounted mail on a few SCA helms this way and it works well. I added individual rings to attach to the rod through as threading it through the main body of the mail didn't work so well do to the orientation of the rings relative to the rod.

Icefalcon's aventails are not a tube, they are the frustum of a cone. Knuut's long aventails are a tube which transitions to the frustum of a cone. Linning it may work, though I am unsure from your description. It sounds like it could be too big in which case stitching the attaching row (where it is...

Most standard skull patterns will fit on 2sq/ft with minimal waste. If you need to pad the skirts/cheeks in addition to the skull you will need about 3 sq/ft of 1/2" foam or twice that of 1/4" . This assumes you are covering the entire inner surfacer with foam: if You want to use bands of ...

To achieve the look of the effigies and be SCA legal you need to lengthen the bascinet below the vervell line to cover the jaw and neck. This will keep the peak of the helmet up where it belongs and allow the vervell line to be correct relative to the face. You will have a fair amount of empty space...

What a cool piece!- congratulations Wade. I wonder about the two large holes on the right side: they look like mounting point for a lance rest but the fact that the upper one is partially covered by the gusset puzzles me. Does the gusset sit off the inside enough that clearance wouldn't be an issue?

I think downwards ( I tend to think of it as outwards) is most typical of 14th century examples. It's a tough spot to see as the hem tends to ...
