I think it's presence on the field is a recruitment barrier as it looks
so absurd and ugly that is drives off folks who expect to see fighters in something they would recognize as armour. At best it is neutral- driving away roughly equal numbers as it attracts.

In my experience Theo's lost represents head sizes rather than helmet sizes. For half inch padding adding 3.5"inches to his list would put you in the ballpark for helmet sizes.

My recommendation would be an upper cannon that extends up the lateral deltoid, a simple hinged scutum shaped shoulder with the hinge point in line with hinge of the of the humerus (such as found at Wisby), and ,for extra insurance, a separate besagew covering the anterior deltoid area. If this desc...

Are you concerned with protecting the whole shoulder or primarily the lateral deltoid? Are you wanting to cover the upper trapezius as well as the deltoids?

It really varies- In St Mikes we don't always require stepping away and returning when struck especially in individual combats. The hand on the barrier is not historic but something that Count Rhys came up with to keep folks from hanging back and being tentative about engaging. Generally the convent...

To anneal and iron or iron alloys you have to brig the piece up to critical temp hold it there for a good while ( say an hour or so) and then cool it no faster than 100 deg F per hour. If it is low carbon steel you can process anneal to reverse work hardening but that still requires a high temp ( @1...

If you intend to mounting it so that it runs up along re sides of the face opening of the helmet as typical of historic examples you will need the long aventail and you will need to trim a section out of it when mounting it.

Barring custom orders modern rivets have standard head to shaft ratios so inspection would be a simple matter at looking at head diameter.
