What I've seen, make the padding as you would any other helm. Pull out the padding and cover it in a velvet. The velvet colors will show through the spaces in the helm giving a nice contrast. YMMV

Local armourer here does that at times. He does basicaly the same thing your talking about and gets decent results.

I've just started the Wisby Armour book, they were a peasent levy, right? I would expect some panic and running for some back wounds. I use a pair of the revival "Light Sparring Gloves" in my finger gaunts. They're well padded, but a bit thick in the palm making it somewhat difficult to hold a sword. They are very protective though, and as you can see by the pic I had these gaunts over engineered, cause I don't like getting hit i...
