What I've seen, make the padding as you would any other helm. Pull out the padding and cover it in a velvet. The velvet colors will show through the spaces in the helm giving a nice contrast. YMMV

Local armourer here does that at times. He does basicaly the same thing your talking about and gets decent results.

I use a pair of the revival "Light Sparring Gloves" in my finger gaunts. They're well padded, but a bit thick in the palm making it somewhat difficult to hold a sword. They are very protective though, and as you can see by the pic I had these gaunts over engineered, cause I don't like getting hit i...
