OK, Agreed that the linens could be very fine, but this would not have been the norm. Not all men at arms would have been wealthy. We were discussing hauberks, not exactly high grade state of the art armour in the 14th century. And even if a man at arms or knight could afford a very nice linen shirt...

OK, I was just mulling this over in my brain. Would not a linen shirt from the 14th century be a lot thicker and sturdier than any linen we have now? I've seen (and wished I could afford) the hand made linen and wool shirts made in a period style. They are very very thick. I mean hand made in that t...

Those tall leather boots...
OK, a while ago there was listed a resource for those tall Renaissance boots on the cheap (like $65 or so?)... my bookmarks all decided to leave me so I need the link again cause I think I'm ready to get a pair. Anyone know where the online store was? They are on E-Bay for $99, but someone posted a ...

The armour collection at the AI really burns me up. They display 225 pieces on permanent display (that NEVER rotates any pieces) out of the Harding Collections over 2000 pieces! Only 10% on display, and a curator who refuses to answer any emails or phone calls about getting into the stacks to look a...

I have made about a half dozen leather spaulders for friends who play Dagorhir. They work well, are easy to make and look cool because the tooling on them is just plain cool. One pair has made its way into the SCA and has held up pretty well... but I didn't wear it so can't vouch for how well it pro...

Anyone got a time machine? I can get my hands on a used M113 or two for way less than thier weight in gold... Very fun and interesting thread! Cool saddle. I need to get one, I'm borrowing one right now from my riding instructor. Anyone have a spare Large or Extra Large tree saddle with about an 18" seat? She really is out of shape. That's why I got her (shareboarding on the cheap) because she NEEDS to be worked. I've had her out just abou...

I must agree that these booklets are great! I have read the Von Prankh Barrel Helm pattern, and it will be my next project. Very good details (I'm pretty new to this whole making armour thing!) and the patterns are clear and simple- printed very nicely on my printer. Can't wait to work on this one! ...

18HH 2200 lb monster! I tried to take some pics of her the other day, but no luck. No flash in half-light Chicago Winter didn't turn out. Need a better digital camera or wait for super sunny day. Very cool. 'Cept you have now gotten me onto yet ANOTHER board. Grumble grumble grumble. My thoughts pretty much go in line with what I have read on the other thread: The destier could have been a draft breed- albeit a middle ages draft (before the 18th century "modern" draft breeds that became so b...

I would think the Lipizaners and Analusions would be too thin to be destiers. They were used as parade horses, but as for large- average size of 15-15.2 doesn't make them very big. They were used as war horses for many many years in the 17th and 18th centuries, when speed and manuverability were mor...

As a paintball player, don't do it!!! OK, let me qualify that statement! Don't take apart your $300 gun when you can go to Sportmart and buy one for $50 that you can rip apart and play with all day long! Sounds like a fun idea. I would do it, but I want to make the real thing. Gunpowder is cool. Fir...

Thanks DS for the post! I must say that I was a little dissapointed in the first sword, but that appears to be a UPS issue- not a DS issue. I did go ahead and get a second piece (the Frederick III sword) and it is Pretty Damn Cool. Not the greatest sword I've ever had, but for the price of a cheap I...

I have to finish the hauberk I'm working on and I now have to make at least two coifs for the jousters. They dig the aluminum stuff for the "heavy" look without the weight. They are looking for coifs that look great from 20-50 yards away... Told Bill I would make him one and another one for a friend...
