IMO, the images above are much closer to period living/experimental archeology than Norstead ever was. LOL, that is seriously the funniest thing I've read in years. If for no other reason then most of our medieval ancestors weren't generally stupid enough to spend time in tents in the dead of winter.

A Pas d'Armes needs two things, a Pas and Armes. Or to be more anglish. You need a passage and weapons. The quintessential Pas that most everyone here will recognize is the scene with the Black Knight in Monty Python's Search For the Holy Grail. Basically a group of defenders will be at x place from...

The English isn't really any good because you would never translate anything out of latin that way. It would be something more like, Victory is hardly nothing. or Victory does not lack value or something. Tell her to stick her nose in the air and come up with a list of 10 snobby sounding ways to say...

I actually took Blood Red Roses to my dentist and while he found it interesting he wasn't surprised by the teeth. Also don't forget that just because life expectancy is short doesn't mean people didn't live long lives. Life expectancy's are always skewed if you include infant mortality in them and t...

Brent is probably thinking of rennhuts, which are a different type of specialized 16th c sallet for a very specific type of german joust. Yes that sounds right. Kinda an off topic but on the current off thread. But what about early close helms or proto-close helms or whatever don't you start seeing...

I am working with my Docs to see if I couldn't balsa joust safely. The issue is the last concussion I received left about 3 month blank in my memory (August through the end of October 05). While the brain MRI and congitive testing came out alright, it was my 11th or 12th concussion (most due to foo...

Edit for how about Paladins? Sodality? Lodge? Guild? Congregation? Fraternity? Fellowship? How about the Quattrocento Hermandad. The Santa Hermandad (Holy Brotherhood) is the name used for the militia/police force in 15th century Spain. It gained a reputation over the centuries as being as much abo...

I don't think anyone other then the people or group running an event have the right to decide what harnesses are good enough and which ones are not. That said I want to note that I didn't put them forward as possibilities for a World Joust 15th century tournament. Many people if not most have differ...

I really think that the sca NEEDS to look at all of the established jousting communities to see what they would like to do. They did. One of the reasons for the successful movement towards this is the original poster is a lawyer and has been able to reshape the liability issues that opened the path...

It was too hard to make it work and to get some people to adhere to the minimum historical standard. Some of the crap they would turn up in would make you cry. This is always what happens when a group does not have a defined idea of what its goal is. Where as you will have success amng an unorganiz...

Minneapolis St.Paul combat opportunities
What is the WMA, VikingsNA, SCA situation in this area?
I have most if not all of an SCA kit but I'm not interested in a run of the mill SCA fighter practice but want to learn sword and buckler or hand and a half sword.

Re: SCA and Allegory
Wow, here is an existential question: Is the SCA an allegorical (should we use symbolic to avoid the religious connections?) interpretation of pre-16th cent culture? And if so what is an allegorical representation of an allegorical incident? If I attempt to re-create the first tourney in Berkely an...

Cliff you have pretty much put yourself in a quagmire. You believe that a longbow is something specific that you can't really make a good argument for. They have a very simple definition of what a longbow is that fits nicely with every other bow definition in use. Personally I don't much care except...
