Well, I want to use language efficiently to distinguish between two types of bows, which so far as I know (there being no archaeology to support this, but iconography suggests it) have similar cross-sections, but one is about shoulder high and doesn't support a draw to the ear, the other is head hi...

Well, it's used in the Paston letters 1485 to refer to a bow that's too long to be fired from inside a low-ceilinged house, to fight off attackers. And I'm pretty sure I've seen c15 French references to the "grand arc" of the English. And in 1512 Henry's statute for encouraging archery-- ...

If the bow is different, what's wrong with giving it its own name? Especially since there the term ("long bowe") is used in the c15 and c16 to mean the English warbow. (And not used before then, and not commonly used until the late c19, when it was used to mean specifically the English wa...

I went over Hardy's chapter and I think both of you are wrong and the Bradbury is closer to what is correct. The problem with the traditional orthodoxy is that it seeks to understand the development of the longbow backwards. It says that the English longbow is the bow use militarily by English armie...

Ok let me see if I have this right, you have two bows both D shaped made of a single piece of wood. You are calling a 6' or height of the shooter bow a longbow. If a bow is the same except a foot shorter with a slightly shorter draw is a short bow?

You might consider using some sort of media selling website for this, especially as you might get bites from people not here. There are sites that do MP3s and there are sites that you could sell it as data CDs or audio CDs.

Evidence always trumps supposition. I'd have to hunt down the references but there have been a couple pre-1300 bows that have been discovered that might give an indication of their original length. Another avenue might be arrowheads. Apparently atleast modern arrowshafts are spined to match the draw...

There is an early 15th century depiction of Chaucers here. m And a decent write up here m Now enters the question of what kind of lawyer are you. Common law, Cannon Law or Civil Law. The later two dress similarly to academics. If you really want to do a really great job do a late-15th century I beli...
