Re: curving half inch plywood

1/2" is pretty beefy. I did 3 crossgrained layers of 1/8 (luan IIRC) covored all around with heavy linnen and edged with 3/8 climbing rope covored with rawhide. Very durable and quite light.

I went and bought me a roll of rawhide so I could get long continuous strips. Anyway, I cut 3" wide strips as long as I need/want them, soak them till they are plyable enough to put on and no longer (otherwise they shrink too much) then stitch them on wet. The wood is drilled before stitching, ...

Does a room in the barracks count? I riveted my Newstead seg, sewed and hobnailed my calcei in my room, cut the leather for both there, made a shield jig for a bud (what a mess), the hinges for the Newstead were made in my bathroom with a dremmel. Hey Freiman and Robyn! I have been thinking about the armor problem here. What about making a water hardened leather harness? With a little tooling and stain, some really nice looking stuff that actually fits could be made. Oh, and probably with less than half a square meter of material as well (hm,...

Yes Templar Bob, You did, and I do thank you. I did not take that part as a flame as I have also seen it in my 17 years in the SCA, and still see it. 13th cent Norman armor question

Howdy all, A bud of mine is wanting to build a new kit, however, there is a small twist here... He would like to have the garb of a 13th century Norman yet not wear the chain. Is there any Norman armor made from larger lamalar, or would it be within reason to say his personna purchased or traded for...

As the maille is being woven, every other row of rings also receives a scale. We take a ring with only one end flattened and punched, hang a riveted ring on it and while weaving as normal I pass the unflattened end through one hole in a scale (or 2 scales if its the last hole in one to get the overl...

Ernst, Yep, there is overlap. The end holes are shared on a ring as the weaving goes in. The decision to use 3 holes came by the fact that we had wound and cut several thousand rings allready but had yet to punch any holes. 4 holes would have caused a nasty bunching effect with the combinations of s...

heh, the site is just a place holder untill I can get the time for the full real site which I plan on bein kinda silly in places and very informative overall. Anyway, the rings will be 4 on 1 maille. The holes in the scales are so that they can be woven directly into the maille which is then riveted...
