It's not so bad, really. There are a lot of members who wouldn't waste their time with it if it wasn't worth signing up for.

If you aren't happy you can always have your account removed??

Ignore gauges and use mm or inches it will save a mountain of hassle.

Everyone seems to have a different idea of what thickness each gauge is. Invest in a digital caliper and save yourself the hassle!

Counersinking is relatively straight forward, with a little practice. 1: Punch your hole in the desired spot 2: Take a drilll bit and chuck it up, something about 2mm more than the hole diameter. 3: carefully drill the punched hole until almost through, maybe 3/4 of the way through the material. car...

If we are going into pieces of exchange and such there are a few surving Renntartsche. These are basically leather and wood shields that cover the jousters left side and bevor. around 1.5/2.5 inches thick.

ill put a pic up when i find one.

Thomas thats the beauty of the internet....I stumbled across them under search terms akin to spanish armor. Either way they do appear 15th century given the style of the armour. We could reverse trace them....dunno if this will lead to much. But worth a try. Just reading this, do you realise how th...

SmartassNativeSpeaker(TM) chiming in for a bit of nitpicking. In German the term "Tartsche" describes a medieval shield of a more or less rectangular shape. A "Setztartsche" is the big infantry version, and "setzen" is not used in the sense of sitting but rather like s...

Micke D: This depends on how much you want to look into pavises. It is interesting but as far as construction details nothing really. How do you mean they are not possible to find?? You could carve the gutter from a solid piece. Even with a router if you must!

Any particular reason for the fibreglass resin? hide glue is a very strong option. mixed right, it won't peel or crack.

Some medieval shields were hewn out of a solid piece there is evidence fo rthis in the odd manuscript. However, i believe most (i haven't seen all) were made of planks or some kind of cross lamination.

Ya know, it's not a historical documentary, it's a film, like knights tale. Not EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME has to be period. When did the director say he was going for 100% accuracy??

Ideally, you want some mass in a helmet to dampen the effect of the weapon. Make it too light and it will not be as protective.

One must ask a few things.

A) Who is it written by? a book caryring academic weight is worth more than an amateurish one published in an academic way.

B) Is the info new or just collated and edited?

c) hardback, soft, perfect bound or sewn????

Good question. the gutter allows you to do a number of things you'd struggle doing with a heater say. Having the gutter enable you to hold the shield one handed without having it lie flat against your arm. This means you can hold it farther off your body covering more area with more ease. You can ho...

Not one piece, but three, well from what i've seen i'm sure there is always an exception to the rule somewhere. Of the few i've handled and taken a closer look at, there are no signs of cross lamination. However, some later shields did utilise this method of construction. The following drawing is of...
