Welcome. You might want to take a look over at: www.anvilfire.com They are more inline with forge work, I believe. However, there is a significant amount of knowledge here and I am sure that numerous folks can assist you in your endeavor. Cap'n Atli works with hot metal, I believe. As does Krag.... ...

I have not branded myself, but scarred.. yep.

My knuckles have a strange and demented attraction to high-speed angle grinders. Mostly when a cutting wheel is attached. Takes months to heal and leaves a nasty bright white scar.

Wisby is well worth the price. You can get it for around $55.00, I believe (as mentioned above). It should be a cornerstone for any 14th century fanatic. I could come up with a handful more, the following is a list of books that I think are essential. Most are readily available: Abiti e Fogge Civili...

Problem with spuntops: - Not many heads are perfectly round. - They don't fit for crap without severe amounts of blue foam padding. - They are often heavier than their welded conical counterparts. - they are not even remotely medievalish. They are but-assed fucking ugly. People aren't wearing freon ...

I also suggest using .025" 1050. It will be MORE than sufficient in a tempered state for what you need. 1095 will only cause unnecessary heartache, pain and cost. Get 1050 annealed. Cut, shape, punch. Then send it out to a heat treat facility to have them tempered. That is your best bet, I would thi...

Spun tops are not your best bet. They only work for a few styles of helms. They look crappy as a general helm for SCA use.

I suggest going with Cet's advice.

I suggest working on your compound curves. Other than a knee cop, elbow cop and helm, I did not see a single complex shape. There were only a few elements of armour that were truly flat/curved. Just about everything had a complex curve to it. Take a look at pictures of the armour from Churburg or tr...
