DO NOT POOR BOILING WATER ON PLYWOOD.
as a rule of thumb untreated plywood (excluding marine grade) is not meant to have water on it. it will cause the plywood to buble something auwful.

I have been looking at all the diagrams or patterns for helms and the one thing the all have in common is that they do not have a supplie list. Yes there is but it can be a real pain if it is for your son i imagine the size is fairly small. the tecnique is often called hot boxing.
