If you look at the "Patterns" section of the Archive, look under "Brigandine". Those are schematics from a very good pamphlet on cloth-based armours, from "The Compleat Anachronist".

Take one spare set of garb and one set of regular clothes, and all the cash you need to get home (gas, tolls, etc) and lock it in your car. That way, if a disaster occurs, you have dry clothes and the wherewithal to get home. (It relieves me of the responsibility of number-crunching if I know I can ...

Chef- would I be completely wrong in making a brig with an outer shell of canvas, instead of velvet? (Haven't found any velvet which didn't look like ugly upholstery knock-offs...) I Have a Ton of Coke
As was announced some time ago, I've fallen heir to a coal-cellar full of coke. It's nice and dry, untouched since the furnace in this house was converted to natural gas during the Korean War. I want the basement back. If you want this for your forge, drop me an email and let's make arrangements. Yo...

Listening to people with more experience, it seems like the calibration and, um, 'enthusiasm' is always high during the early melee season. Does it take a while to get 'back in the swing' of fighting in groups? PS: Conrad, I thank you, Ragnar and Octavian for your warm (and dry) hospitality Saturday...

I've been using a Tentmasters 15' mitered square pavillion for about 4 years now, and I heartily recommend their work. I can set it up in a square space 21' on a side with ropes, and with one assistant it goes up in about 20-25 minutes. They were a pleasure to do business with, and I've been pleased...

I pulled a cheat and made hose from a pair of black sweatpants. You need to remove the waistband and cuff elastics, then have a friend carefully pin them to a snug fit. Re-tailor to fit, and close the front with eyelets for points. (I reinforced the waistband with canvas where I plan to run eyelets ...

Atli - that's exactly how it went with my cloak. How much it shrinks is an unknown, but it will shrink under that kind of treatment. Please, always pre-wash (and full) your yard goods, not the finished garment. Good wool may shrink up to 6" per yard when it's washed in hot water and tumbled dry in a hot drier. You end up with a wonderfully dense cloth on which you barely need to finish the edges, but it can be a heartbreak when t...

Be aware that linen's notoriously fussy to dye (cotton & wool are much easier), and if you're using natural dyestuffs like onion skins, you need an amount equal in weight to the fabric you're dyeing. Thats alotta onions! (If your mom works at a monastery, make friends with the kitchen staff...) Scor...

It's the classic "Time or Money" dilemma. You can lay out $3000 for a full kit and (probably) have it assembled in a few weeks, or you can make it yourself for about $200 in your "spare" time. Does anyone have any "spare" time? Send it to me if you're not going to use it... http://www.armourarchive....

The good Baron from An Tir (name escapes me) who is the "god" of rubber-band guns advised us on how to use the heat-shrink cable wrap to produce a more secure fastening. Last year we basically forced about 1" of the tube into the other end and duct-taped it. We has some failures. I'm not sure the pr...

The pressurized gas/liquid rattan guns seem to be on the way out. Our gun, since it's just a big rubber-band gun (and fires ammo identical to that fired by the "rifles") got intensively inspected by a wide range of marshals last year. They agreed we were all good, and the Mk II due out for this year...

Do you want to be an "Artillery God"?
Last year at the Pennsic War, the Fellowship of the Oaken Blades introduced the rapier-field foes of the Midrealm to the concept of field artillery. The rubber-band cannon "Clairiel" proved an enormous success and, facing her might, La Rochelle fell twice in one afternoon! http://www.armourarchive.o...
