m Zalea/wool saddle cover avaialbe commercially with a bit aof digging and expense. Otherwise most ot the features on a Portuguese are pretty square so making a cover of material should be pretty simple. I think a couple of the surviving earliest saddles which resemble modern Portugueses were velvet...

An experienced bareback rider can be far more secure on horse than you might expect. Charging against a mounted knight on horseback with lance he would be at a sever disadvantage but against a less well armoured opponent he could surprise you. Roman riding is display of bareback riding skill with pe...

When the gun became prominent the armoured lancers role on the battlefield was severly diminished but remained viable in several respects. Until the invention of the needlegun in Germany just prior to the 6 days war reloading was a lengthy process and the range of non-rifled barrels meant that an in...

Man flax and woman flax? One of the reasons I don't put too much faith in Babel Fish. They seem to get messed up more in German than in French or Spanish . . . German is a big fan of the ei ie vowel combination and by switching them around or misplacing one or the other you can vary the meaning, te...

...Arne's armour is based primarily on the effigy of Ulrich Busch, circa 1470. I don't know where the effigy is located, and unfortunately I don't have any photos that I have rights to post. My apologies. Secondarily, the cuisses are primarily based from an image of St. Michael by Michael Pacher, w...

The questions about nobility and and Landesknechts have me once again looking for clarification. I am under the impression that the Landesknecht officers were German nobility. When I read about rank and file Landesknechts they discuss infantry and tactics but their officers were usually nobles who w...

I always kind of figured for a mercenary serving a foriegn nation to ask for payment up front. But when your own sovereign requests youir service to think of it as putting a little something away for that estate back home. I guess thats longsighted thinking versus short. You can't travel Europe fore...

I do have a Chinese wife and how in the world am I supposed to explain that. I couldn't even explain wearing a belted plaid and that was only a couple of hundred of miles. Looks like I'm up the proverbial creek. Be a Portuguese. They were certainly there in the 16th Century, and married local women...
