Mittens and clamshells pretty much fall into the same category from what I have seen. 16 ga. stainless sounds fine. The mousepad goes between the glove and the metal.

Quick answers

Gambeson went under armour and wasnt too thick, Jacks were made as cloth armour and were regularly up to 20 layers thick.

The coat of plates can be anything from a ver few (such as the 6 you are talking about) up to over a hundred.

I definately agree, my setup (that is about to be made) is going to be 4-5 layers of cotton batting on the body, and about 2-3 down the arms. There is just lacrosse arms and a kidney belt (that might get replaced by plastic pouch bits). I have worn two or three layers of clothing (simulating multipl...

The best mantra for this thread though, has to be:

If you have a 4" square of skin that isnt scarred somehow, by the time you are 50, you havent been living." Told to me when I was working out at a camp 50 hrs a week and living outdoors the entire time. Duct tape and scrap paper were bandaids.

I seem to remember us discussing this very pic a loooonnnggg while ago, and most people thought that the whole was because the stomach was protected by the high saddle, and the chest wasnt. Also brought up because of the mirror imaging as an example of really shiny "chrome" armour.

I just had a mental image of a bad hollywood version of someone hitting another with a sword, and the blade flying off (think using a United Cutlery on a stump!) and them just holding the handle. Does that count as unloading the sword?

Hey audax, I just found your sig line funny, because the guy in the pic is known as the Phoenix of Sol Haven, after falling face first when firewalking two years ago. The gauntlets are red with black phoenix's on them.

You might be suprised how much of a difference it makes if you put a string around the neck and cinch it after you have it on. It pulls most of the weight off your arms and onto your shoulders. Just a suggestion from someone who is starting to get used to wearing maille.

Depends on what you want to use for the maille. If you are simply doing butted, you can get a 1/4 mile of 17 ga. wire from Home Depot or 14 ga. from a farm store for just under $20. You then have to wind it into rings, cut those off, and then weave your design and style (aka. Euro 4-1, byzantine cha...

Is ^ how it hangs normally with only taking out a couple of rings width, and the weight of the maille drags it apart? Because if that is the case, it would seem that the shirt would "overlap" when laid out. Is this correct or am I just way off base? Do people take out triangles or just vertical rows?

Hey all, I just picked up a butted maille hauberk from Von Sussen at GW, and am starting to actually getting a chance to modify it to fight in. You could try sewing the straps onto the leather. There might be a small problem with riveting through links, but if you laid the links flat, you could probably take some sinew or waxed linen thread and sew it on. Not sure exactly how strong it would be though. What are you strapping on your hauberk?
