From what I remember of hearing Aaron Schnatterly talk about it (Albion scabbard guy), the seam is on the flat, skived both pieces to lay without a bump, overlapped to a degree, glued down mostly, sewn and glued to finish. I seem to remember something about attaching it wet, and stretching it to fit...

Where the risk differs is in what happens when the safety measures fail. If your armor fails catastrophically, the major risk is severe contusions and broken bones. If a rapier fails catastrophically, the major risk is a deep puncture wound on a broken blade. Luckily, such failures are very rare. S...

Animal, you got any idea how little force it takes to put a sharp rapier through skin and muscle? According to a trauma doctor who studied this, skin tends to resist about 3-5# of pressure, indenting inward until pierced. It then springs back, with the underlaying tissue offering less resistance. T...

There is no rule about the back of the knee in SCA regs. VI. (Armour Standards), H (Leg Armour) 1. The kneecap, an inch above and below, and both sides of the knee joints must be covered by rigid material, lined by at least ¼ inch (6mm) of closed-cell foam or an equivalent padding. You do realize it is shipping about halfway around the world, correct? What would you expect shipping to be, when in the US you could easily pay about 10 for the same? Part of the problem is the minimum shipping amount (aka. a box that is up to x kilos costs Y dollars). Even if you are under that, i...

Knowing very little about jousting per se, I would make a suggestion that marshalls be picked out of a very selective group, with the ability to stand up to just about everyone, and stick by a judgement call. This would ideally be based off of the higher experience of the marshalls in actual balsa j...

Gwen, have you thought about trying to contact any of the Youth Combat Earl Marshalls and seeing if these are durable enough for that? If they were to pass, I could easily see parents getting one of these instead of a hockey helmet (probably cheaper), and it would drastically improve the appearance.

I've always been fond of this German miniature in the British Library from the late 13th. Notice the square front coifs, and the apparent poleyn within the cuisses. m From what I remember seeing, the square bib was definatively a later 13th century German thing. So if you really want to define your...

Ebay Alert
Antique seax.
Real or fake? To me, it looks like it is in just a bit too nice of a condition, and the lines look a bit artificial. All of the other seaxes I have seen have a very clear definition on the slant, instead of the gentle curve of this one.

According to the rules, you are to gauge any part of your armour at the same calibration, regardless of the direction of the impact (aka. if it hits the brim, angled away from your face, its still good). This is based off of the armour standard we are all assumed to be wearing. Anything not controll...

If you would like to try and start the ball rolling a bit more on this, I wish you luck. AFAIK, reports have to be submitted under a certain timeframe b...

What type of leather are you looking at wanting on there? I could probably easily do the type of work you are looking at (with the possible exception of the cord going thru the vervelles, as I don't have anything suitable besides doubling or tripling wax linen thread). What is the overall hang vertically, and how big can the chest get up to (stretching it on the ground, measuring and doubling)? Getting the same style of helm as pictured (without the face) could probably be ordered in the 300-400 dollar range. This would probably be without the fluting on the panels. I love my aventail for fighting in. It really does help both the weight of the helm settle lower, as well as neck protection ...

Hi there, Ok nobody shoot, but a while back I made a full 16g steel suit loosly based on General Mandalores armor for a costume. At first glance, it appears the arms will not wrap around your elbow enough to provide the neccesary coverage for SCA heavy combat. I am also skeptical of greaves that are a straight cylinder, lacking even basic shaping and flares so as not to dig in. Legs appear equally shady, but nothing specific ...
