I wouldn't worry about the helm too much, its pretty sweet. If you like the maile idea, you could always atach ont to a gorget or something to give the appearance if a maile coif or something of the likes. With the hidden legs, it easy. The biggest thing to watch out for is abrupt edges and edges th...

Also check to see if Sir Uric Blackoak has a e-form of how to cover modern shoes, pretty easy from I remember of him talking about it. Lots of good ideas going here: Cover the arms and legs and if not try and go a bit earlier forms of them, like was mentioned shovel greaves or just hidding them. Rea...

And really I should be the the one worried about that with Paul, well me and HG Radu, since Paul's only about 2 inches shorter than us! I really wanted this post to die, but since someone else replied to it.... Paul, you might want to "edit" your first post to remove some stuff, so not to ...

You know sometimes I write in all caps, cause well my work requires me to do everything in caps, just habbit. So sometimes when I misspell a word as I do so often, does that mean I'm drooling and wearing a saftey helmet when I post a message? so this makes everything ok, right? I mean really who car...

Here is a new pic of me wearing the hidden stuff. At least the best I could find. You can see how they really are hard to see under the tunic and pants. The tunic sleave is actually raised up in this pic, it normally goes to my wrists. The bracer is just a simple one thats attached to nothing, it ju...

and finally the knee cop.
Again simple knee and added leather for extra portection. Also the bungee cords here really help hold the knee cop in place. They are pulled together tight and tied on the side. I wear the leg wraps up to the top of the knee and this also helps them from sliding down.

my hidden armour pics

A few here on the AA requested that I post a few pics of "my" hidden armour. So here goes.
Half gaunts- leather gloves with heavy leather. The leather peices are backed by pig skin senw together and in between them is a layer of blue camp foam that was cut in half to reduce the thickness.

Hjalmr, If you need some pics of my hidden armour, just let me know. Some of the keys to doing a nice Norse or Viking age kit is to have protective armour that is hidden but remain within the rules and safety of the SCA combat rule set. Proper tunic, pants, legwraps, shoes and belt can go a long way...

I've seen and felt of this helm at practice the other day and my ovs were this: Beautiful helm and nice lines Built like a tank! Your noggin would be well kept! But it is actually too big for Paul. That is a massive shield! How much does it weigh?

I've found through my experiances that I can get a wooden oak or otherwise handle to last very long, I had to switch to a rattan handle cause it gives a little more flex and wont snap.

Well, I live in Upstate New York, so I'm familiar with somewhat cold temperatures... I found that layered linen and wool, with a wool cloak kept me pretty comfortable, as long as I'm not just standing around. Add a Birka cap, naalbinded wool socks and mittens, and woolen winengas (leg wraps)... and...
