Ireland was colonized by Celts...much like America was colonized by English, Spanish, French, Dutch, etc., in the 200 years prior to the founding of the United States. Ah, but we can point to the settlements of the English, Spanish, French, Dutch, etc., in the U.S.; we know where they were. Where a...

I have a particular interest in the metalwork of the people we loosely call "Celts," but beyond that I haven't paid special attention to archaeological developments in Ireland over the past 15 years that would lend support to the notion that there has ever been a sizable influx of any Celtic tribe ...

William, et al... (back to the thread at hand...)
Check out this site of Reenactor links for both Hallstatt and La Tene Cultures. Lots of fantastic pictures of Celtic armour. This should truly give you an excellent sense of what you might be looking for.

Just so you lot know where I am coming from, I'm not an armchair Historian. I attended Uni for Pre-Historic Archaeology and have been everything from a trench digger to field researcher (back home in England) to an Assitant Archaeologist of 2 digs With Wake Forest Uni in North Carolina. And as stat...

The One thing that binds some Celtic Tribes to Ireland (and the British Isles for that matter) in the Late Bronze and Early Iron age is the Language. By the 2nd Century CE Ireland was a Celtic Speaking land. Such a massive language shift can only attest to the wide influence of a singular peoples, ...

Northern italians look decisively more like french than irish. I don't think there is a commonality between Kelts and Gauls (a.k.a. Galati, Galli) Bruno, Depends on what you mean by what an "Irish" person looks like I think that what a person looks like nowadays has nothing to do with the ancient p...

I made my own Finger gauntlets with a 7-lame articulation for the wrist to metacarpal. I followed Master Cad's patterning for the fingers but made the gads longer on the sides so the metal would reach the rattan and dissipate any blow more. I also have an enclosed thumbtip. They are tremendous gaunt...

Not too shabby, Magnus! Are you worried about your fingers getting crushed for SCA combat? From what I see and read above they are Clay Moore finger gauntlets (albeit in kit form) for all intents and purposes, which should be more than adequate for SCA combat...it's all on how they are put together...

Duke Gavin has made hardened leather with acrylic polish. I'm sure he could advise you. I don't understand why it is that you want to do this thing, but it looks to me like it would work. Why a leather shield, and why hardened with acrylic? Once upon a time, waaaaay back when in the Dominion of Myr...

Matthew and Robert above are correct, actually. Pants, per se , have been in use for around 2500 years...possibly more. The Celts and Scythians used them ( There are some extant fragments from Halstatt and Continental La Tene cultures from 200-500BCE) as well as some use amongst early Germanic cultu...
