What type of backing is it on? Artificial sinew is good to use, as is waxed thread. Possibly even speed rivits depending on the material used for backing. Why exactly are the scales falling of? Is the thread just breaking or is the backing falling apart? ------------------ --Edric-- edric@edricsrose...

If you are talking about using finger gauntlets for SCA heavy fighting, I think you must not like your fingers, go with mitten gauntlets, and make dang sure you cover your thumb well. If you really want to make finger gauntlets, make them for your costume. If you decide to do SCA heavy fighting late...

Scale aventail
I have a bascinet in the mail to me at them moment, and I am planning on making a scale aventail for it. Has anyone here done this and if so what tips do you have? Any pics? I was planning on making it with a canvas backing with 18 or 16 ga stainless scales around 3/4" wide and 1 1/4" long(rough est...

Ya, I always get most of my books off of half.com. This semester I had a gift certificate for the local bookstore for my text books, so I got them there. $200 worth, came home and found 3 of them on half.com, so I am taking those back to get my money back. In the end I will end up spending $100 tota...

Well, the armour is for a woman first of all, a woman who wants to be protected very well. Basicly what we are looking at right now is a stainless demi-breastplate(covering about the collarbone to just below the breasts), black and red alternating tooled hardened scale from the breastplate to about ...

Wax hardened scales
I am making my lady some wax hardened scale armor and I had a few questions. First off, I have been using bee's wax to harden them for the past few days, then I thought about the fact that this is not going to be a period suit of armour anyway, so why am I using bee's wax? My question, if I wanted t...

Matt- I am planning a similar project to go with my globose breast and backplate with all the metal scrap we have laying around the shop. The method I used was almost the same as yours. I clamped the 2 pieces together used 1 ratchet strap to bend the middle around a tree. MathRocks- Bob Hurley's point was that it was a bad idea in period, not that it was a bad idea for SCA use. You really don't need to worry about getting cut in the armpit. I made my gambeson with lace on arms, and like it very much. Not only does it allow ventilation, but if it is really hot, you ca...

Dwarlock- The way I do it is to paint the brass with paint, shellac, clear-coat, whatever. Then I use a sharpie to put the design on the paint, and scratch off the area to be etched with a sharp pointy object. The whipstitching across the top of the flap goes through the back of the pouch. You could stitch across the loops also, but I made them too small to fit through my belt that way so I just left them open. I think it looks better this way anyway.
