new Rapier (SCA) Helm in progress

I've been working on this for a while... I'm not sure how long, since the top of the helm is recycled from my previous rapier helm that I often wore a hat over, which I made in 2004. The perf-plate face plate has been replaced by a repousse steel face (the original nose cracked so I ground it off an...

Very nice work Zanetto, that is the first reproduction of one of those that I've seen. Nissan, will that be going to Pennsic with you? If so I would love to take a look at it in person.

I've had similar things happen with stainless mail that I've made. I've heard that it is oils from manufacturing that get dirty and rub off, but I've cleaned the mail several times and it would still turn stuff black after a while. I'm no metallurgist or chemist, but after almost twenty years of pla...

Psst. Photoshop. the purpose is "teh Inarwebz funniez" I would have said the same thing, had I not seen a similar set up on a saber before. No, I'm pretty sure thats real. Purpose is another six or so inches of reach. If that is the purpose, would it not be more effective to move the hilt down too?...

Thank you Brian, I thought that would be the answer. I'm working on a similar style face for my rapier helm that I am rebuilding. My first SCA kit was welder's leathers that I cut up and retailored into the generic poncho style coat of plates shape that I saw a lot of people wearing. I then riveted leather squares all over it to make scale armor. I think I had football shoulder pads under it, and football thigh pads (?) covere...

yup, I had a pound or so brick of oil based plasti-something clay. For some time now I've been going back and forth between building or buying a venturi style forge burner. I have a "convertible Wedge" from Jas Townsend. My only complaint over the last five years of using it is that it does not have the mud flaps things that similar tents from other companies sometimes have.

This got me thinking about dishing stumps... How do people care for and maintain them? Mine is maple about 2 ft in dia. and close to 3 ft tall. Very heavy (used a backhoe) to get it out of the bush! I want it to last... Cracking and spliting are my biggest concern and I have started to oil the surf...
